Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 28, 2005 Grace Christian supports Pilot Rock By ANITA BURKE Mail Tribune Medford’s Grace Christian Schools has signed a consulting agreement to provide administrative and curriculum assistance to Pilot Rock Christian School in Ashland. The agreement could lead to an eventual merger that would push Grace Christian Schools further toward creation of a "Christian school district" with multiple campuses around the Rogue Valley, said Pilot Rock school coordinator Linda Olson. Grace Christian Schools, which started in 1974 as a ministry of First Baptist Church, is one of Oregon’s largest private schools with close to 975 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grades. Its high school, Cascade Christian in Jacksonville, merged with Grace Christian primary and middle schools three years ago, but maintains a separate budget and corporate identity. Pilot Rock, which has 55 students in preschool through fifth grade, started in 1988 as Grace Lutheran Christian School and last year changed its name to Pilot Rock. Classes, including on-site, after-school care, are held at Rivergate Church, 188 Garfield St. Linda Olson said Grace Lutheran Church recently decided it couldn’t support the school as part of its mission. Parents who wanted to prevent the school’s closure and retain its Christian roots went to Grace Christian for help. This month Pilot Rock formed a new, parent-operated, nonprofit corporation. Advertisement "I am excited that our schools can come into a closer relationship," Grace Christian Schools Superintendent Ray Johnson said in a prepared statement. "We have been blessed here at Grace Christian Schools and are happy to share insights into (school) operation and assisting Christian parents." Grace Christian will share curriculum and administrative services, such as bookkeeping, with Pilot Rock. Rhea Tuttle, a 17-year veteran teacher at Grace Christian Schools, will become lead teacher at Pilot Rock, which has an eight-person staff including five teachers. Pilot Rock hopes to boost enrollment and increase fundraising efforts as it builds its ties with Grace Christian, Olson said.
