The Jackson County Sheriff's Department reported the crash happened just before 9 p.m. in the 3000 block of Highway 227 in Trail. The agency said the driver, 43-year-old Rodger Oliver of Trail, was driving a 1979 Jeep CJ, when he lost control of the vehicle.  The Jeep overturned and struck a tree. Passenger Kenneth Craig, 41, also of Trail, was thrown from the vehicle.  Oliver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a sheriff's office news release. Mercy Flights transported Craig to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center with "serious but non-life threatening injuries," the release said. Hospital officials listed Craig in fair condition Thursday.  "The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, but it appears that excessive speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors," the release said.  It is not known how fast the vehicle was traveling prior to the crash. Sheriff's department Sgt. Tim Snaith said there were no reports of reckless driving in that area around the time of the crash. That section of the Tiller-Trail Highway hasn't been an accident-prone site, historically, Snaith added.  He said the crash site is near a curve with no posted speed limit along that stretch. “We don’t respond out there very often," Snaith said.  Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] .
