They only last about five seconds, but then I have to reset my digital clocks. Why is this? — Elizabeth H., Medford We don't like those types of outages either, Elizabeth. They're almost too short to notice, but long enough to inconvenience you later. What you are describing is a momentary power outage. These are caused by a temporary short circuit, or a fault. According to www.kub.org , the causes of these faults range from big events — such as a tree limb hitting an electrical line or a car running into a utility pole — to small things such as little critters in the power lines. When a fault condition occurs, it trips the circuit breakers to protect the utility equipment. After the fault is cleared, the breaker that opened can close again, sometimes automatically, which restores power. This process typically happens in a matter of milliseconds. All of this results in resetting of digital clocks on microwaves, DVRs, alarm clocks, ovens and other items. An inconvenience? Sure.
