Leevers ride into spotlight Laurie Leever of Medford and her daughters, Betsey and Kara, and their horses, were the top winners announced for 1999 by the Southern Oregon Hunter/Jumper Association. Laurie Leever was the long stirrup champion rider, and Kara Leever was the equitation champion rider. Kara's horse, Park Avenue, was champion in both the junior and open hunter divisions, and Betsey Leever's horse, Driver's Ed, took top honors in the intermediate hunter division. Nicole Anderson of Medford won the hopeful rider award, and Sarah Maynard of Klamath Falls was the reserve champion. The short stirrup title and the reserve equitation title went to Ashland's Cate Azima, and the short stirrup reserve winner was Brooke McLeod of Trail. Long stirrup reserve winner was Debra Newcomb of Coos Bay. Linda Bogatay's Aastonish, ridden by Cari Boaz, won the intermediate, junior and open hunter reserve titles. Adult amateur champion was Jezebel, ridden and owned by Karen Boots. Reserve champion was First Dibs, ridden and owned by Rhet Chang. The jumper division champion was Castle Beau Geste, owned by Potoquimi Farm and ridden Derek Latty. Bodega, owned and ridden by Heather Karnatz, was reserve champ. Association directors also were elected for 2000. They are Katie Bubb, Sandi Boaz, Leslie Zock, Martha Brooks, Joan Latty, Dave Keiser and Laurie Leever. Junior representatives are Azima and Cari Boaz. Keiser, of Medford, earned the Gastaldi Award for contributions to the sport. The Spring Gold series of hunter/jumper horse shows begins at Heather Hill Farm on Sunday. There also will be shows April 9 and May 7. They are open to all riders. Points awarded at these events will go to the association points championships. The shows start at 8:30 a.m. and spectators are welcome. Heather Hill Farm is on Coalmine Road off North Phoenix Road between Phoenix and Medford.
