That changed Monday when Phoenix blanked the Hornets in a shootout, 1-0. “We’ll celebrate tonight, but when we wake up in the morning we’ll be looking forward to playing Klamath Union on Thursday,” said Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner. Sam Macias, Joel Mereida-Ford and Jorge Pinon made good on their shootout attempts for the Pirates (5-3, 4-1 Sky). Mereida-Ford also filled in as Phoenix’s shootout goalkeeper for Javier Castrejon, who made four saves in 100 minutes of regulation and overtime. In a tough call, said Flenner, he opted for senior Mereida-Ford, who stopped all three shots he faced in the shootout. Pinon played well at center back, said Flenner. The Hornets (7-1, 4-1) had given up only two goals in league, both to Hidden Valley in a 3-2 win. The Pirates outshot the Hornets 18-12 and the teams had three corner kicks each. NORTH VALLEY 2, HIDDEN VALLEY 1, OT: At Merlin, Trinidad Flores provided both goals, including the winning shot in overtime for host North Valley. Flores netted in the 95th minute and also scored the Knights’ regulation goal at the 62-minute mark. He received assists on both shots from David McLittle. Hidden Valley evened the score 1-all in the 68th minute on Abraham Martinez’s penalty kick. The Mustangs (3-5, 2-3 Sky) were able to take the PK after North Valley (5-4, 3-2) was called for a handball. Girls Soccer HENLEY 5, PHOENIX 0: At Klamath Falls, Phoenix held its ground against the one of the Skyline Conference’s top teams in the first half before Henley opened the floodgates in the second half. The Pelicans (5-3, 3-1 Skyline) got two goals from Mackenzie Virtue. Junior left back Claudia Delgado played strong defense for the Pirates (0-8, 0-5 Sky). NORTH VALLEY 1, HIDDEN VALLEY 0, SO: At Murphy, it took six tries but North Valley pulled through on Tristin Vandehey’s shootout goal against host Hidden Valley (1-6-1, 1-4 Sky). Brianna Robles and Bailee Durham made the other two shootout goals for the Knights (3-6, 2-3), who received three shootout saves from goalkeeper Cassandra Wessels and two in regulation. Volleyball CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0: At Cave Junction, Cascade Christian served 17 aces and senior middle hitter Madigan Smith posted 11 kills in the 25-13, 25-11, 25-21 Southern Cascade League win. Sophomore Nicole Morse and freshman Allison Winter both recorded four kills and four aces for the Challengers (13-4, 5-0 SCL). Morse added 12 assists. After barging out to a 9-1 lead in the third set, the Challengers were able to absorb a surge by the Cougars (4-10, 0-5). IV’s Allison Primeau scored seven service points to help whittle the Challengers’ lead to 23-21.
