"They do a procession from the National Academy to the law enforcement memorial downtown, and there are motorcades from all over the country that come to escort the family members," Falls told a gathered crowd at the August D. Singler Plaza in downtown Medford. "And I was standing there at the memorial, and one thing that stood out to me that I just couldn't believe is it just seemed like the buses were never going to stop coming. Family members who have seen the loss. And I was thinking to myself, 'Man, is this ever going to stop?' " Officers from the sheriff's office joined Medford, Eagle Point and Central Point police at the 10 a.m. ceremony to honor local officers who died in the line of duty in the past century. Government officials from Jackson County and the city of Medford, along with the public, packed the plaza for the event, which included a bagpipe performance, color guard officers flying the U.S. flag at half mast, and a reading of the 10 area police officers' names who died in the line of duty between 1913 and 2002. "All life is special, but this is the time we remember the lives of folks who are out there every day risking it," said Medford Police Chief Tim George. The ceremony was part of National Police Week, May 10-16, and Peace Officers Memorial Day, first proclaimed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, according to the National Police Week website.
