After losing his mother to cancer less than a month ago, the developmentally disabled man will move from a group home to his own apartment. Building skills toward independence over the past year, he looks forward to the change, which his mother had hoped to see. The 60-year-old woman also was a Living Opportunities client, who lived on her own with occasional basic assistance from the nonprofit organization. Moving into his own apartment means that the young man, like many his age, needs household items. He has selected some sundries and saved money toward several of the purchases. But gift cards to Walmart and Target would help greatly and serve to offset the cost of other unexpected necessities. Frequently commenting that she couldn’t believe he was all grown up, the man’s mother never gave up on his care, despite the challenge of her own disabilities and terminal illness. Her greatest wish was to travel with her son to the Oregon Coast, which Mail Tribune readers generously fulfilled last year. A week’s free stay in a local resident’s vacation home made the trip possible, along with funds donated for fuel and meals in response to the cancer patient’s story featured for Light One Candle. Her son cherishes his memories of that special experience, said his caseworkers. Living Opportunities operates under the mission of giving people with developmental disabilities places in the larger community, working for the same employers, living in the same neighborhoods and experiencing life in ways to which everyone aspires.
