What’s going on? — Justin W., Medford The elaborate brick building may not look up to snuff right now, but it will look better than it has in decades when the windows are replaced. Stripping, repairing, painting and staining the windows is the third phase of a massive restoration project that was first announced in 1994, said Craig Meyer, clerk for the U.S. District Court in Medford. The project came with an estimated $1.6 million price tag. Renovators were guided by old drawings and photographs of the circa-1915 building, constructed in a style known as Georgian-Second Renaissance. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the three-story brick building has served as a post office, courthouse and federal office complex. Over the years, spacious marble lobbies had been cut up into small offices for various federal agencies. The project aimed to restore some of the grandeur of the building once graced with a high-ceilinged lobby and courtroom, arched windows and broad expanses of marble and terrazzo. Regular federal court activities began in 1994. The federal judiciary appointed a full-time magistrate to serve Southern Oregon, and with that a full-time clerk's office opened.
