The Comets amassed five pins and two technical falls in the season-opening contest. "As a team," said Comets coach Greg Haga, "we were pretty aggressive. We attacked them. We were working on certain things in practice, and the kids went out and did a pretty good job of that." North Medford won two matches, both by pins from Ulreys — by Jon at 103 pounds over Andrew Van Way and by Jimmy at 152 over Jordan Godley. Otherwise, it was all Crater. The featured match was at 160, where Crater’s Ron Lee upended North’s Rob Folsom, 17-7, in a battle of state-placers from last year. Lee placed sixth at 152 pounds, while Folsom — the SOC district champion a year ago — was seventh at 160. Folsom, a junior, began the match with a takedown, but the sophomore Lee escaped to pave the way to a 6-4 lead after one period. He extended it to 10-6 after two periods. A takedown by Lee in the third enabled him to stay in control. "Folsom’s a stud, and Ron did a good," said Haga. "That’s two possible state finalists right there, I think." Ashland’s Nate Marshall won the first match of the night, scoring a pin over Kelsey Dobner at 145 pounds with one second to go in the first period.
