South pulls away from KU KLAMATH FALLS - With Andres Reed sidelined because of an injury, Rob Brown picked up the slack for South Medford's football team on Friday night. The bullish senior running back rushed for a career-high 215 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers defeated Klamath Union 33-14 in Southern Oregon Conference football at Modoc Field. Reed, the SOC's third-leading rusher, sat out the game with a sprained ankle. The Panthers improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the SOC. South will visit once-beaten Grants Pass next Friday in a game that may decide second place in the conference. The Boomer Marshall to Ryan Heil connection accounted for South's first two touchdowns. Marshall, the junior quarterback, found the SOC's leading receiver for a 50-yard scoring strike with 8:17 left in the opening quarter. The Pelicans (2-5, 1-4 SOC) answered with a 52-yard first quarter touchdown pass play from quarterback Jeff Mortenson to Sean Anderson to tie the game at 7-7. In the second period, Marshall passed to Heil, who hauled in a game-high seven receptions for 112 yards, for a 8-yard TD. Cory O'Neill upped the Panthers' margin to 17-7 in the second quarter, but KU cut the margin to 17-14 at halftime on a 1-yard run by Brad Mejia. In the second half, the Panthers' defense shut out the Pels and Brown got rolling. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound back scored on a 34-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, then capped his productive night with a 2-yard scoring plunge with 38 seconds remaining in the game. The Panthers' offense accounted for 386 yards, with 230 coming on the ground. Marshall was an efficient 14-of-23 passing for 156 yards and no interceptions. KU picked up 216 of its 266 yards in offense on the ground. Mejia rushed for 110 yards on 21 carries. ROSEBURG 26, GRANTS PASS 21 - At Roseburg, SOC-leading ground gainer Rod Cope rushed for over 200 yards and scored two touchdowns for second-ranked Roseburg (6-0, 4-0 SOC), but Indians two-way star Joe Newton went down with a knee injury in the first quarter and never returned. Newton's replacement at tight end -Levi Thomas - caught what proved to be the winning touchdown on a 12-yard reception from quarterback Adam Hazel in the fourth quarter. The Indians took the opening kickoff and drove 79 yards in eight plays to score the game's first touchdown. Cope went through the middle of the line and cut to the left for a 43-yard TD run with 8:23 to go. A Thomas interception returned 45 yards to the Grants Pass eight set up the Indians' next touchdown. Cope went 7 yards on the second play to give Roseburg a 13-7 lead. The Indians increased their lead to 19-7 when Hazel hooked up with Cory Whitman on a 44-yard touchdown pass 7:21 before halftime. Grants Pass capitalized on a Roseburg defensive blunder to cut its deficit to 19-14 in the third quarter. Whitman was in position for an interception, but let the pass go through his hands to an opportunistic Kory Mahr, who ended up scoring on a 77-yard play. The Cavemen finished the scoring in the final seconds when Tyler York outjumped a Roseburg defensive back in the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown.
