South Medford holds off Grants Pass Wednesday Jan 24, 2018 at 2:00 AM GRANTS PASS — With its leading scorer plagued by foul trouble and slowed by a box-and-one defense, the South Medford girls basketball team surged past Grants Pass in the second quarter and held off a second-half rally to win 57-43 on Tuesday night. The Panthers (11-7), who improved to 4-1 in the Southwest Conference, saw their 16-point halftime lead trimmed to eight heading into the final period as the Cavers (10-7, 2-3 SWC) took advantage of an off-night by South’s Ula Chamberlin. Chamberlin, who played only 13 minutes after picking up three fouls in the first half and a fourth foul early in the fourth quarter, scored seven of her nine points in the final period, helping stabilize the team after Grants Pass made its run. With Chamberlin on the bench, Bella Pedrojetti provided a consistent scoring threat and finished with 12 points, including 2 of 3 from behind the 3-point arc, and Toni Coleman added 10 points. During their second-quarter flurry, the Panthers received key baskets from reserves Paisley Fish and Evelyn Laupola, and starters Emma Schmerbach (22 minutes, eight points, four rebounds) and Shakia Perry (six points, five blocked shots, 10 rebounds) had especially big contributions to help make up for Chamberlin’s unusually quiet game. “It was good to see some other kids step up when we lost one of the anchors in the starting five,” South coach Tom Cole said. Still, with the game on the line and the Cavers closing in, it was Chamberlin who provided the steadying force to help protect the lead down the stretch. “That’s kinda the rollercoaster with this group,” Cole said. “There’s a lot of learning that goes in every game. “This team is learning that you have to play to win and not worry about losing,” he added. “We were fortunate enough to survive Grants Pass’ run. They’re well-coached and they’re a good team this year.” Ahdra Klingler scored nine of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter for the Cavers. SOUTH MEDFORD (57): K. Chamberlin 6, Coleman 10, U. NORTH MEDFORD 65, ROSEBURG 34: At Roseburg, Megan Fossen posted a double-double and North Medford forced 23 turnovers in the SWC road victory. Fossen, North’s senior post, poured in 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds — one more rebound than Roseburg’s team total. Rylee Karrick added 17 points for the Black Tornado (10-7, 4-1 SWC), which won its fourth straight conference game. MARY’S 43: Emma Bennion tallied a game-high 19 points in a losing effort for St. Mary’s in nonconference play at St. Mary’s High. St. Mary’s (4-14) led 25-18 at halftime and clung to a one-point advantage going into the final period.
