Touchdown Ducks, the sixth of the day for No. 2 Oregon in its eventual 48-14 win against Wyoming on Saturday, memorable mostly because of who scored. The former Oregon basketball player in his first season on the football team as a fifth-year senior wide receiver, caught the first touchdown pass of his career and first since his days at Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas. “Words can’t describe the feeling,” Loyd said. “Once I realized where I was, emotions just took over and I started screaming.” His switch from point guard to receiver began during spring practices after his basketball eligibility had expired. Before Saturday, his only other catch was for 1 yard in the season opener against South Dakota. “That was the best part of the game for me,” receiver Keanon Lowe said. “I’ve seen how much work he’s put in to get up to full speed. It’s pretty impressive. I was happy for him.” His TD against the Cowboys came on a 5-yard pass from Mariota in the third quarter that gave Oregon a 41-7 lead. “It takes a special athlete to be able to do that,” said Mariota of Loyd’s transition from basketball to football. “I was juiced for him.” DARGAN DELIVERS: Safety Erick Dargan had two more interceptions on Saturday to bring his season total to three, and all have led to Oregon touchdown drives. Both picks against Wyoming came on consecutive drives in the second quarter. The first was on an overthrow by Cowboys’ quarterback Colby Kirkegaard that Dargan returned 35 yards to the Wyoming 25. Three plays later the Ducks scored to make it 20-7. On the Cowboys’ ensuing possession, they drove down to the Oregon 19 but Dargan was able to get a hand on another high throw from Kirkegaard and tip the ball to himself for his ninth career interception. Oregon went 85 yards on its following drive for the score and a 27-7 halftime advantage. “Dargan made a couple of great plays,” Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said. “He’s been doing that all camp… He’s been exactly how he practices. And that’s amazing. He’s had a ton of picks in practice very similar to the play that he had today.” STREAK SNAPPED: Oregon’s win ended Wyoming coach Craig Bohl’s 26-game winning streak. The first-year coach last lost in 2012 when he was still at North Dakota State, where he won three straight FCS championships from 2011-2013. “I’m disappointed in the loss,” Bohl said. “We knew it was going to be an uphill challenge and we were going to have to play error free. We certainly didn’t do that. It’s going to be a learning experience for us.” After Mariota accounted for four touchdowns and 292 yards of offense in 2½ quarters, Bohl was sure to praise the play of the Oregon junior. “I don’t know if anyone in this room has a vote for the Heisman Trophy, but I encourage you to take a look at your ballot there for the quarterback,” Bohl said. “He’s a tremendous player and I thought he played extremely well.” BELLOTTI HONORED: Former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti will be going into the College Football Hall of Fame in December and on Saturday he took part in an On-Campus Salute by the National Football Foundation with a ceremony on the field just before kickoff. Bellotti, who received a Hall of Fame plaque for Oregon to display, was head coach from 1995-2008 and took the Ducks to 12 bowl games in 14 seasons, including the 2001 Fiesta Bowl when the Ducks finished No. 2 in the national rankings. His 116 wins are the most in school history. ODDS AND ENDS: With the victory, the Ducks became the first team in the nation to record 50 wins this decade. … Oregon extended its sellout streak at Autzen Stadium to 99 straight games with an announced crowd of 56,533. … The Ducks have won 13 straight against nonconference opponents. Their last loss was to LSU in the opening game of the 2011 season. … Oregon is now 52-18-1 all-time against teams that currently make up the Mountain West Conference. … The Ducks will complete the home-and-home agreement with Wyoming in 2017 when they play at War Memorial Stadium in Casper.
