The Pirates went on to a 4-1 victory in the league-opener for both teams at Hagler-James Park, but the star of the match may have been North Valley goalkeeper Karyn Allen. Phoenix peppered Allen throughout, getting off 24 shots to the Knights’ two. Allen finished with nine saves. "(Allen) did an amazing job," said Phoenix head coach John Doty, whose team improved its overall record to 3-4. "We pounded her from every angle, but she held her ground and made a bunch of saves." The score remained 1-0 until the 28th minute, when Jamie Campbell scored off an assist from Wiltrout. Phoenix’s final two goals were scored by Sarah Kieffer in the 69th minute, off an assist from Ashley Novak, and by Kelly Singleton in the 71st minute, with Riley adding her second assist. North Valley avoided a shutout when freshman Kayla Wilhelm connected in the final minute of play. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 7, MAZAMA 0 — At Klamath Falls, Jessica Tresser notched a hat trick in Cascade Christian’s District 6 opener. Kayla Zielke put the Challengers up 1-0 in the third minute and Tresser upped the lead to 2-0 at the half. Tresser scored again in the 45th and 49th minutes, while Crystal Humphries added two goals and Stephanie Cotta one. Tasha Gerig and Sarah Brown stood out defensively for Cascade Christian (4-1, 1-0), which outshot the Vikings 29-8. HIDDEN VALLEY 5, ST. MARY’S 2 — At Murphy, Nina Jaramillo scored two goals and Jill Elder had a goal and an assist to pace Hidden Valley to the District 6 victory. St. Mary’s led 2-1 at halftime on the strength of two goals by Katie MacDiarmid, but Hidden Valley tied the match in the 42nd minute on a spectacular 48-yard free-kick goal by Kim Hill. The Mustangs took the lead on Elder’s goal in the 51st minute. Alyssa Tobin and Jaramillo added insurance goals over the final 11 minutes of play. Hidden Valley improved to 1-1 in league play and 3-3 overall. HENLEY 5, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Klamath Falls, junior Heather Orlisse broke a scoreless tie at the 17-minute mark of the first half to give Henley a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Hornets stung Rogue River with four unanswered goals in the second half from as many players. Henley’s second score came from senior midfielder Jenny Orlisse, assisted by Jill Mathis at the 49th minute. Marica Roseterolla scored on an unassisted shot in the 58th, and a minute later, Loren Williams took control of a loose ball off a corner kick and converted. The game’s final score was provided by Tara Campbell, assisted by Brianna Coombe. Henley’s offense had 20 shots on goal while the defense held Rogue River to 10. Skyline Boys PHOENIX 6, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Cave Junction, John Feeney scored three goals and added an assist as Phoenix posted its fifth shutout in five Skyline Conference outings. Feeney bent two first-half free kicks around the Illinois Valley wall to give the Pirates a 2-0 halftime lead. Feeney struck again on a corner kick two minutes into the second half. At the 67th minute, Kyle McKinnis took a cross from Adam Dietrick and scored from close in to give the Pirates 4-0 command. Two minutes later, Brian Bones headed in a corner kick from Feeney. Kevin Cowley completed the scoring in the 79th minute. Phoenix dominated shots, 19-1. The Phoenix defense was led by John Chavez, Bones, Doug Lavagnino and Nathan Bursk. HIDDEN VALLEY 4, NORTH VALLEY 2 — At Merlin, Daron McGloughlin played a well-rounded game to lead the Mustangs to a Skyline win. McGloughlin scored the game’s opening goal, assisted on another and attempted seven of the 16 shots taken by the Mustangs (5-2, 5-1). Dillon Borta added two goals to bring his season total to 13, and Jason Hart scored his first varsity goal. Robert Navarro and J.B. Handley each had a goal for North Valley. MAZAMA 2, ROGUE RIVER 1 — At Rogue River, Eric Malgoza and Danny West each scored second-half goals to lead Mazama to a Skyline win. Malgoza opened the scoring in the 57th minute and West followed suit 10 minutes later to put the Vikings up 2-0. Nano Fegaralla put Rogue River (0-5 Skyline), which outshot Mazama 10-8, on the board in the 75th minute.
