Organizers expect crowds to top 15,000 at the popular festival happening Mother's Day weekend. "Everything is hand-done and handmade," says event coordinator Amy Rose. "Look for metal art, jewelry, garden decor and art pieces. It's become a tradition for people to buy Mother's Day gifts at Art in Bloom." Festival-goers should stop by Vogel Plaza, corner of Central Avenue and East Main Street next to Craterian Theater, to visit an information booth and pick up a map of the event and its schedule. The festival is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 9, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 11. Artisan booths will be set up on East Main and Bartlett streets and Central Avenue. Teens from Life Art/Life Track will create graffiti art live on panels while crowds watch. They also will offer individual paintings for sale in front of Central Art Supply, 101 N. Central Ave. Kids can hold lizards, snakes, a hedgehog and other animals as Nature Joe entertains families with his large selection of reptiles and animals. Nature Joe's ark will be located in a parking lot between the Craterian Theater and Rogue Gallery & Art Center, 40 S. Bartlett St. Also on the animal front, Hope Ranch will bring a petting zoo with ducklings, baby goats and a pony for kids to brush. Kids can plant flowers for their mothers in peat pots. The Hope Ranch activities are in front of US Bank, 827 S. Central Ave. ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum will have several exhibits for curious minds near Central Avenue and Middleford Alley. Annie the Clown will present Fun Town with a jump house, interactive puppet theater and face-painting on the corner of Central Avenue and Seventh Street. Members of BMX Freestyle Team will perform exhilarating tricks and stunts during shows at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday near Bricktowne Brewing Company, 44 S. Central Ave. Enter a free raffle at each of the performances for a chance to win a BMX bike. Watch a 10-by-10-foot image emerge as chalk artist Jaime Bryn creates a piece of street art outside Central Art Supply. "She does it progressively over the weekend," Rose says. Budding artists can purchase their own square to create chalk art for $5. The live entertainment lineup on Saturday is Ann & Friends, Holden Jones and the Carli B. Band, Rogue Valley German Band, Danielle Kelly Soul Project, Living on Dreams and Dance Arts Academy on the Bartlett Street Stage. Sunday's performers are Ballet Folklorico Ritmo Alegre, Pete Herzog, David Pinksy's & Phil Newton's Over the Moon Band, line dance lessons and The Roadsters. Other performers demonstrating their skills during the festival will include guitar players, gymnasts and dancers. Calligraphers, spinners, weavers and glass-blowers will demonstrate their crafts all weekend at Vogel Plaza and Theater Alley. Other activities include assorted make-and-take crafts for kids who want to make special gifts for loved ones. Scattered throughout the Art in Bloom festival, kid entrepreneurs will have lemonade stands and offer tastes of their own exclusive drinks for $1 each. Vendors will offer a range of food to feed the crowds. Art in Bloom is a nonprofit organization supporting art education. This year the group is helping to support Medford's Logos Public Charter School and Walking Tall programs that connect male teenagers with adult, male mentors for automotive, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, fitness and outdoor activities.
