PREP BASKETBALL Giles guides Tornado to 52-41 win BEAVERTON -- Ashlee Giles was a one-woman wrecking crew Monday night as North Medford spanked Redmond of Washington, 52-41, in the opening round of the Cascade Holiday Hoop Festival. The 5-foot-9 senior scored a game-high 21 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, had six steals and might have chipped in at the concession stand had she not been busy scoring 12 of the Black Tornado's 14 third-quarter points. "Ashlee brought her A-game today, and we needed all of it," North Medford coach Mike Kay said. "We played a team that was tough." With Giles keeping the Tornado (7-1) in contention, Lu Crenshaw and Jenny Close sealed the victory with clutch free throw shooting in the game's final two minutes. Crenshaw and Close combined for a perfect 11-for-11 effort from the charity stripe to close out the contest. "When you go 11-for-11 in the last two minutes, that pretty much takes the game away," Kay said. Crenshaw finished with 10 points, seven assists and four of the team's 14 steals. Close scored eight points. Emily Ashbaugh kept Redmond in contention until she fouled out with two minutes to play. The 6-4 post scored a team-high 18 points. "She was nails. I'm just glad we finally fouled her out," said Kay. North will face another stiff challenge tonight at 6 against Santa Barbara, Calif. It is led by 6-0 wing Lisa Willett, supposedly one of the best players in Southern California.
