"This is the strongest opponent front to back that I’ve seen in my career," said Phoenix coach John Doty. "They were very fast compared to what we’ve seen elsewhere." Seven of the Aardvarks shots came from sophomore Jessica Tsao. Tsao, a District 1 first-team selection last year as a freshman, scored twice for OES that set up a 2-0 lead. Tsao’s first goal came in the 18th minute, and she scored again 10 minutes into the second half. Lauren Eyler finished the scoring in the 62nd minute with the Aardvarks final goal. "The game felt like it was in reach in the first six minutes, and then it went downhill very rapidly from there," Doty said. Phoenix freshmen Jordan Ceremony and Molly Hobson had the unenviable task of trying to pace Tsao and Eyler. Normally a midfielder, Hobson was moved back to play defense in place of fellow freshman Becca Singleton, who was injured in the Pirates’ first-round matchup against Pleasant Hill. Singleton and Ceremony both played every minute this season, leaving Hobson with a big pair of shoes to fill. Advertisement "Hobson did a very good job," Doty said. "They were just a very dominant team." Senior goalkeeper Jaclyn Unruh came up with 10 saves for the Pirates, but couldn’t hold off the Aardvark attack. Unruh allowed only 12 goals in 17 games this season. The Oregon Episcopal offense, aided by 13 corner kicks, raced to 13 shots, while the Pirates struggled for two of their own. Phoenix really only had two scoring opportunities; the first on a 35-yard direct kick in the first half by Tamara Heryford. Kristi Jensen came off the bench for another shot late in the game. The season-ending loss acted as an eye-opener for Doty and the Pirates (11-6 overall). "The thing that’s really kind of scary is that this team (OES) has gotten beaten pretty badly this year by Sherwood and Wilsonville," Doty said. "We’re talking about an entirely different level of soccer going on with Portland-area schools." HIDDEN VALLEY 1, SISTERS 0 — At Sisters, smart play by Hidden Valley earned the Mustangs a trip to the state quarterfinals this Saturday. Backup goalie Airica Cornwell, with help from a controlling attack, earned the shutout in only her second game in the net. Offensively, Aleesha Zeppetello gave Hidden Valley the game-winning score off a crossing pass from sophomore Bailey Southern. Southern lofted the ball from 24 yards out to the far post, where Zeppetello headed it in the goal. Tenth-ranked Hidden Valley outshot Sisters 10-8 in the win. The Mustangs visit sixth-ranked Philomath Saturday. CATLIN GABEL 4, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Merlin, seventh-ranked North Valley couldn’t contend with the defending state champions in a first-round game. Ninth-ranked Catlin Gabel moves on to play Marist in a second-round game on Saturday. The District 6 champion Knights end their season at 13-2.
