Edward Clyde Sodders, 45, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Owen M. Panner in Medford Friday after entering a guilty plea in November. The conviction resulted from a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Medford police, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a press release. On May 10, 2005, FBI agents searched Sodders' Central Point residence after an online investigation revealed he was sending child pornography over the Internet. Medford police Detective Mike Blair conducted a forensic examination of Sodders' computer and discovered more than 2,500 images of child pornography, predominantly of young boys. Blair also found evidence that Sodders was posing as a teenager and corresponding online with boys in their early teens, the release said. Federal prosecutors said Sodders initially denied any knowledge of child pornography on his computer, claiming someone else was using his screen name. However, an additional forensic examination of the computer, AOL records, and his employment records showed otherwise, officials said. When FBI Agent Jeff Gray confronted Sodders with the additional information, Sodders admitted both his involvement with child pornography and that he had been posing as a high school student to meet boys online, the release said. Sodders has two sexual abuse convictions in Jackson County Circuit Court. He was on probation as a sex offender when he committed the Internet crime, prosecutors said. In 1986, he was convicted of second-degree sexual abuse for a case in which he fondled a 5-year-old boy at a video arcade. In 1995, he was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse for abusing an 8-year-old handicapped boy. That investigation also revealed that he had abused more than a dozen other young boys, the release said. The child pornography case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas W. Fong.
