Man gets probation for stabbing Edward W. Edward W. Stiverson III, 46, was sentenced to three years probation in Jackson County Circuit Court after pleading no contest to felony third-degree assault and methamphetamine possession charges related to a stabbing near downtown Medford in September. At just before 1 a.m. Sept. 25, Stiverson, while high on meth, reportedly accused Jeramiah Lanning of stealing his car in the 100 block of Tripp Street. Though Lanning denied it, Stiverson punched him, cut him on his hands and face, and fled in the truck Lanning was driving, which belonged to Lanning's cousin.  Stiverson was apprehended near the Medford police station at 10th and Oakdale about 20 minutes after the altercation, archives show. According to Stiverson's court-appointed defense lawyer, Christine Herbert, Stiverson was cooperative with law enforcement, though he has no recollection of the incident. "He indicates it was a blackout," Herbert said. Herbert said Stiverson plans to seek treatment for his meth addiction. He had hoped to enter the county's Drug Court program, but wasn't eligible because his case involved a person crime, Herbert said. If Stiverson fails to comply with terms of his probation, which include drug treatment, he'll serve 30 months in prison.
