PHS student earns FFA title for lamb By Joe Zavala Updated: Jun 11, 2021 03:20 PM A A Phoenix High School freshman Jayden Vos earned Champion FFA Market Lamb honors at the Jackson County Lamb Auction Sunday, with a lamb registered in the lightweight class that weighed 122 pounds and sold for $20 per pound. The Future Farmers of America award represented a little bit of history for the school, according to Phoenix High agricultural sciences and technology teacher Jeremy Kennedy. “This is the first time Phoenix High School has had a champion market lamb from our FFA chapter in a very long time,” said Kennedy, who is the school’s FFA advisor. “Jayden is a hard worker, which shows in her fantastic job raising and showing this lamb. Winning this award as a freshman says a lot about her bright future.” Two other Phoenix High students also received awards Sunday. Freshman Julie Johnson won the “1st Blue” award in the lightweight class with a $15 per pound sale, and sophomore McKayla Hatfield-Calhoun won the “2nd Red” award in the heavyweight class with an identical $15 per pound sale. The Phoenix High FFA chapter received another bit of good news recently when for the second year in a row it was awarded a $5,000 donation from the Morris Family Foundation. The donation will be used to help cover the chapter’s travel expenses during the 2021-22 school year.
