October 04. 2014 12:44PM Prescribed burning planned in national forestland More than 8,300 acres — including 1,189 acres in the Ashland watershed — will be burned starting this fall in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest as part of prescribed burning to improve forest health. The burning will start as soon as weather conditions allow and continue through spring 2015, according to a U.S. Forest Service release. They are designed to reduce the amount of woody debris on the forest floor, decreasing the intensity of future wildfires and helping minimize impacts to natural resources and neighboring communities. The burning takes place on days when the Oregon Smoke Management Office indicates suitable weather conditions for dispersing the smoke. Burn projects across the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest include the following. Siskiyou Mountains Ranger District: • 1,189 acres hand-pile burning in the Ashland watershed. • 56 acres hand-pile burning in the Upper Applegate Road area below the lake. • 535 acres underburning in the Upper Applegate Road area below the lake.   High Cascades Ranger District • 200 acres hand-pile burning throughout the district. • 32 acres underburning at Huckleberry Mountain. • 200 acres underburning near Butte Falls. • 300 acres underburning near Prospect.   Wild Rivers Ranger District: • 4,000 acres hand-pile burning throughout the district. • 120 acres underburning in the Buckhorn area. • 100 acres underburning in Waters Creek.   Gold Beach and Powers Ranger Districts: • 1,200 acres hand- and machine-pile burning across both districts. • 450 acres underburning in Adams Prairie as part of meadow restoration projects.
