Senior guard John Berger scored 23 points on a blazing 8 of 9 shooting (5-for-6 from 3-point range) as North Medford opened the season with a 69-49 rout of North Eugene at the Black Tornado gym. "John Berger is continuing to shoot the ball well," said North Medford coach Tim Sam. "It’s not really a surprise. He’s shooting the ball with a lot of confidence right now." North Medford outscored the Highlanders 20-11 in the second quarter to open up a double-digit lead. "It was two things," said Sam explaining his team’s second-quarter burst. "Our defense really picked up. We did a great job of defending fullcourt and that opened up the game a little bit. Advertisement "Also, we took great care of the ball." The Tornado committed 17 turnovers for the game, but had none in the decisive second period. Senior point guard Drew Herrera, who is playing with a knee brace because of a torn MCL, scored eight points to go with eight assists and no turnovers. "For the first game, that’s a heck of a start," Sam said of Herrera. "It was a remarkable performance." Senior post Ty Ryan added 10 points for North Medford, while Kyle Williamson contributed nine and Ben Running seven. Running, Abe Eubank and Ryan each pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Black Tornado.
