The starting right guard believes he’s suffering from mild food poisoning, which began Friday. "It was a little shaky today, but it was good to get out running around again," Schuening said. "I just couldn’t hold down any food. But things are going fine. I’m still feeling a little weak. With these next two days, I’ll be fine come game day. I don’t think it’s a flu. I’m not running a temperature." Schuening has until Tuesday night to recuperate. That’s when the Beavers (6-5) face Notre Dame (6-5) in Bank One Ballpark for the 16th annual Insight Bowl. The redshirt freshman from Pendleton started feeling sick after breakfast Friday. He fought through the illness the first practice, but needed to rest Saturday. Advertisement "I woke up this morning feeling like 100 bucks, but then I ate something and then I didn’t feel too good," Schuening said. "But it’s on the uphill run right now; we’ll see come game day." If he can’t play, there’s a problem with OSU’s depth on the line due to suspensions and players leaving the program. There are a number of freshmen here but they are being redshirted, which leaves only redshirt freshman Kyle DeVan, junior Chris Miller and sophomore J.C. Ronnfeldt available. "I’m a little worried because I thought I’d be in better shape today, but there’s a big difference today than yesterday," Schuening said. A sign that he’ll be ready came Christmas night during dinner. The 302-pounder dressed up and played Santa Claus for the team. Senior free safety Mitch Meeuwsen has been invited to play in the inaugural Las Vegas All-American Classic on Jan. 22. That brings the OSU total to six seniors playing in all-star games. This game was called the Paradise Bowl for two years, played in St. George, Utah. It’s one of five contests that showcase the talents of seniors for NFL scouts. "It’s going to be fun," Meeuwsen said. "Hopefully it will give me some exposure and I have a good time in that game." Derek Anderson, Aric Williams and Doug Nienhuis are in the East-West Shrine Game. Jonathan Pollard is in the Hula Bowl. Bill Swancutt was going to play in the Shrine Game, but decided to play in the Senior Bowl on Jan. 29 in Mobile, Ala. "It’s more prestigious and there are more NFL scouts," Swancutt. "It’s an opportunity to get more exposure." Notre Dame players feel they’ll be auditioning for next year during Tuesday’s game. For some, it’s for the NFL draft. For others, it’s for new coach Charlie Weis. "A lot of players need this game to improve their (NFL) draft value, or to just get to the next level," cornerback Preston Jackson said. "And the seniors just want to win." Weis won’t be at the game since he’s busy as an assistant coach with the New England Patriots until the end of their season. However, he’ll be able to see his future team on television. It will be the first time Weis sees the players in action since being named the new coach. "Right now everyone is going out there to try their best," kicker/punter D.J. Fitzpatrick said. "So in a way we are auditioning every game. It’s really no different, we’re just trying our best."
