Gabriel Lovell, 42, of Ashland, is in the Josephine County jail, with a bail listed at $100,000. On Jan. 8 at 9:41 p.m., a 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Lovell was headed south on Highland Avenue near the Merlin I-5 exit when it sideswiped a parked semi-trailer parked on the right shoulder. The crash killed front passenger Megan Becklund, 32, of Grants Pass and rear-passenger Jeremy Pearson, 36, of Ashland. Lovell fled the scene, but Oregon State Police made contact with him later that night in Grants Pass, according to Matthew Corey, deputy district attorney for Josephine County. It took two weeks to solidify a case against Lovell, Corey said Friday afternoon, explaining why he wasn’t arrested initially. Lovell came to the District Attorney’s Office Friday morning with his attorney and two OSP detectives, Corey said. “He was tracked down that night (Jan. 8), but it was just a matter of time putting a case together,” Corey said. “Once his attorney contacted us and said he wanted to talk to us, it made it a lot easier. He came in this morning and said he was the driver.” Corey added that Lovell was Becklund’s fiance. Lovell’s arraignment is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at the Josephine County Courthouse. Earlier OSP releases indicated that detectives knew Lovell was the driver of the truck, but did not say that they had talked to him.
