Events on tap for Labor Day fires anniversary Sep 05, 2022 01:00 AM A A A variety of events throughout the area will mark the anniversary this week of the Almeda and South Obenchain Fires that broke out over Labor Day in 2020. Friday, Sept. 9 Unete will celebrate the community’s resilience focusing on the Latino community, but open to everyone, from 3 to 7 p.m., at the Unete Center for Farm Worker Advocacy, 607 W. Main St., Medford. There will be a community resource fair, free food, food boxes, mini workshops on self care, bike safety, workers comp, onsite counseling services, music, vaccines, free backpacks for the first 50 kids, raffle, mobile farmers market. El Tapatio, 1633 Highway 99 N., in Ashland, will commemorate the anniversary from 7 to 11 p.m. After the fire, El Tapatio became a hub for survivors to get a free meal, water, clothing, diapers, luggage and many other things that were necessary. Thank El Tapatio for its efforts toward putting the community back together, and celebrate the gradual rebuilding of the Southern Oregon communities with food, drinks, music and dance. Suggested donation of $10 for the bands providing music: Collin and Co., Smiley T and the Tall Trees, Seth Charles Band, and Good Job Honey. Saturday, Sept. 10 Talent Commemorative Fair - Talent Town Hall, 206 E. Main St., 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The resource fair will bring together organizations working to bring relief to those still struggling, along with a mariachi band, games and activities for kids. Unity through Community: Honoring the Spirit of Resilience - At Blue Heron Park in Phoenix, from 3 to 6 p.m., the Jackson County Long-Term Recovery Group will offer storytelling, free food, workshops and other resources. Groups include Talent Maker City, Unete, Rogue Community Health, Access, Catholic Charities, Jackson County Library Services, city of Talent, Zone Captains, Coalición Fortaleza, Rogue Food Unites, La Clinica, Rogue Community College , Rogue Work Force Partnership, Talent Business Alliance, Pollinator Project Rogue Valley. For information, see www.rogueactioncenter.org/ Saturday, Sept. 17 Phoenix Rising Celebration - The city of Phoenix will host the event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Phoenix Elementary School. Free barbecue, activities and swag for kids. Free shaved ice. Visit with community leaders, meet Almeda Fire first responders and check out new city projects Participating partners include Jackson County Emergency Management, Jackson County Fire District No. 5, Phoenix-Talent Schools, , state of Oregon and Phoenix police.
