North packs a punch in caging Cougars BEND - Rob Folsom and Evan McArthur put on a power show at Mountain View High School on Saturday. The North Medford sluggers each hit two-run homers in the second inning, and McArthur added a three-run blast in the fourth as the 10th-ranked Black Tornado hammered out a 9-7 victory over the Cougars. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out with North Medford leading 4-3 after 31/2 innings. The twin bill was originally scheduled to be played at Miles Field in Medford. Folsom, a sophomore catcher, clubbed a pitch 400 feet over the center field fence in the second inning and, after Tyler Engle got aboard on an error, McArthur homered to left field to give North Medford a 5-0 lead. Mountain View came back with four runs in the bottom of the second - two of them on Kyle Renstrom's home run - but McArthur connected for his three-run shot in the top of the fourth that gave the Tornado an 8-4 lead. Kyle Summer hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, and Sean Ohlrich added a solo shot in the seventh for the Cougars, but it wasn't enough. McArthur, a senior shortstop, finished the day 4-for-5 with five RBIs. "He's a three-year starter with a lot of innings under his belt," North Medford assistant coach Sandee Kensinger said of McArthur. "We expect a lot out of him, and he's giving it to us." Ditto for Folsom, who went 2-for-3 with a double, homer, two RBIs and four runs scored. Dustin Butler scattered seven hits, induced 12 fly-ball outs, struck out four and went the distance for the Black Tornado, now 3-0 on the season. CRATER 11-1, SOUTH SALEM 7-4 - At Central Point, Crater used a six-run fifth inning to win the opener, then suffered its first loss of the season in the non-conference doubleheader against ninth-ranked South Salem. The unranked Comets, who won state two years ago and made the semifinals last year, are 4-1. In the first game, Crater's Trevor Ryan had an RBI double in the fifth to go with run-scoring singles by Derek Petersen, Sean Teaters and Dan Casey. Ryan and Casey each had two hits, as did Frank Drake and Jared Maddocks. Ryan drove in two runs. In the second game, the Comets' lone run came when Petersen singled in David Sills in the sixth. ROSEBURG 2-11, THURSTON 1-1 - At Roseburg, senior pitchers Michael Myhre and Nick Debs produced stellar outings to lead Roseburg to a doubleheader sweep. The Indians (5-0 overall) used two third-inning runs to eke out the opening win, then scored 11 in the first four innings to turn Game 2 into a rout. Myhre (2-0) went the first five innings of the first game, giving up no earned runs on five hits and striking out four. Senior Garrett Stembridge nailed down the save in two innings of relief. Debs (1-0) fired a four-hitter in Game 2, allowing no earned runs while striking out four. Seniors Ben Cooper (2-for-3, three RBIs) and Grant Goodell (2-for-2, two RBIs) paced Roseburg's offense in the nightcap. Softball SOUTH MEDFORD 11-6, SHELDON 0-0 - At Eugene, Darci Byrne and Mallory Hoover pitched shutouts as South Medford improved to 5-1 in non-conference play. Byrne allowed two hits, struck out eight and didn't walk a batter in the six-inning first game, which was ended by the 10-run rule. Hoover gave up three hits in five innings before rain halted play in the nightcap. She fanned four and had no walks. In the opener, the Panthers' Mickie Conley was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Christen Palazzolo had two hits and three runs. Palazzolo drove in a run in the second game. KLAMATH UNION 6-12, BEND 0-11 - At Klamath Falls, sophomore pitcher Bess Fagan tossed a shutout in Game 1 and earned the save in a wild Game 2 as Klamath Union swept Bend. The Pelicans (3-4 overall) took advantage of a six-hitter from Fagan (1-2), who struck out five and walked one, in the opener. In relief in the second game, Fagan held Bend scoreless in two innings for her first save. KU freshman Tabatha Cooke blasted a two-run home run, her first, in the opener. In Game 2, she improved her pitching record to 2-0 and also went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. BLANCHET 4, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3 - At Jacksonville, Lindsey Wolfe stroked a two-run, fourth-inning single that gave Blanchet a 4-1 lead, and the visitors from Salem hung on for the non-conference victory. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out. Cascade Christian (1-2) scored two runs in the sixth to close within 4-3 and nearly tied the game in the seventh when Hannah Gettman doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice by Whitney Brookins and then was narrowly thrown out at the plate following a grounder by Laural Kelley. Natalie Dicus had two doubles, and Gettman had a double and single for the Challengers. Kelley had a strong game on the mound as she limited Blanchet to four hits while striking out 13. Boys Tennis SOUTH MEDFORD WINS TWO - At Coos Bay, South Medford needed the last doubles match to take out North Bend 5-4 and coasted past Marshfield 8-1 in matches Friday. Scott Jeter and Jason Cumbie teamed up to beat North Bend's Forest Hogue and Duke Stebbins, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 in the final match to lift South to the win. The Panthers (2-3) won four of the five singles matches but dropped the first three doubles matches before recording the win. South swept all five singles matches against Marshfield.
