Pennell wins 3 awards Bob Pennell, photo editor of the Mail Tribune, won three awards in the 2001 Washington-Oregon Associated Press photo contest. Pennell took second and third place in the portrait category and second place in features among non-metro newspapers. His second-place portrait was Sandy McCallum, an actor at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival who had recorded a CD performing King Lear in hillbilly style. The third-place portrait was a silhouette of Newt Likely, 76, of Jacksonville, who participated in a story about voters. Pennell's second-place prize in feature photography was a shot of a group of young people being hypnotized en masse at the Jackson County Fair. Other Oregon winners included Dean Guernsey, of The Bulletin in Bend, first place in portraits; Benjamin Brink, of the Oregonian, third place in the picture page-picture story category for metro newspapers for his photographs for "The Boy Behind the Mask," the Portland newspaper's Pulitzer-Prize winning story; and Sol Neelman, of The Oregonian, third place in the news category for metro newspapers. The contest winners were announced Tuesday. Newspapers were divided into two circulation divisions. Newspapers of more than 50,000 daily circulation competed in the Metro Division; all others competed in the Non-Metro Division.
