The Pirates’ Skyline Conference schedule (7-2 overall, 5-0 Skyline) features three key weekend doubleheaders this month — Rogue River, Illinois Valley and Henley. The plan in the world according to Shearin: Win those three doubleheaders in April and the rest will fall into place. The Pirates overcame a two-run deficit to win the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Illinois Valley, 3-2. Phoenix completed the sweep with a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. The game was moved to Eagle Point because Hagler-James Field in Talent had taken on too much rain. "We came into this doubleheader knowing IV, with Kim Hamilton on the mound, can hurt you if you’re not careful," Shearin said. "We faced a good, quality pitcher. "Fortunately we didn’t run out of innings before we found a way to win that first game." The Cougars (3-2 Skyline) went up 2-0 in the sixth when Tiphanie Pope doubled and scored on an RBI single by Erika Riley. The Pirates, who took sole possession of first place in the Skyline Conference with the sweep, came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Shonda George doubled with one out to start the rally. Jennifer Dunlap reached on an error to give the Pirates runners at first and third. Hamilton struck out Christina Saldivar for the second out of the inning. But a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Tiffany Ross tied the game with a two-run double off the fence. In the second game, Kelsey Russell went 2-for-3 with four RBIs for Phoenix and Larrisa Wiltrout had two hits and an RBI. Rogue River’s Kristi Frederick, Jill Artoff and Lacey Scroggins each provided two hits. Rogue River pitcher Laura Jones picked up wins in both ends of the doubleheader. Jones had two hits in Game 2, along with Madi Biggs and Erin Rodman. North Valley (3-7, 0-5 Skyline) scored two runs in the fourth inning of Game 2 on a bunt single by Michelle Beck, Kellye DePorte’s RBI triple and Rita Long’s RBI single. HENLEY 18-8, LAKEVIEW 1-1 — At Klamath Falls, Kristin Brunnelle sparked Henley (7-0, 5-0 Skyline) with three hits and four RBIs in the opener, and Sheri Nelson led the Hornets’ attack with three hits and two RBIs in the nightcap. Junior pitcher Katrina Kessler picked up victories in both ends of the doubleheader and helped her cause with two hits, two runs and one RBI in the first game.
