Smith's office is deluged A flurry of voters clamored to reach U.S. Rep. Bob Smith Tuesday to let their views be heard on whether President Clinton should be impeached. At Smith's Medford office on East Main Street, a receptionist said at 4 p.m. Tuesday that the office had received well over 1,000 phone calls. Her phone would ring again as soon as she hung up. She referred further questions to Smith's spokesman in Washington, D.C., whose phone was continuously busy Tuesday afternoon. Outside Smith's Medford office, motorists honked their horns in support of a picket sign that read, "Impeach Congress! Stop the coup d'etat." David Rogers of Rogue River, who'd been holding the sign about three hours as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, said there had been no strong negative reaction to his sign. He said there was "no question" most passersby were with him; about two-thirds of the motorists were honking and giving the thumbs-up sign. "I'm not excusing him at all, but it's not an impeachable offense," said Rogers, who said that top historians believe Clinton should be censured, not impeached.
