Actor William Coyne, who portrays Scrooge, and director Toni Holley both wanted the part to be more than a caricature. "Even though he comes across as a curmudgeonly, miserly man, he's incredibly lonely," Holley says. "All the people from his past have left him. That's why he's so bitter. Rather than being just grumpy and mean, he's lonesome. He doesn't know how to socialize. He's lost the ability to go out and meet people." Randall Theatre, at the corner of Third and Front Streets in downtown Medford, will launch "Scrooge! The Musical" on Thursday, Dec. 10, with an opening night reception. A pre-performance dinner with drinks begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by the musical at 7:15 p.m. Tickets for the opening night reception and performance are $20. Tickets are $18 for regular performances at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11-12, Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 17-19, Wednesday, Dec. 23, and Saturday, Dec. 26, and at 1 p.m. Sundays, Dec. 13 and 20, Thursday, Dec. 24, and Monday, Dec. 28. In the classic tale, Scrooge is a selfish and miserly man hardened by bitterness and the loss of everybody with whom he was once close, including the love of his life and his greedy business partner, Jacob Marley. One Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by Marley's tormented ghost, as well as the kindly Ghost of Christmas Past, the jovial Ghost of Christmas Present and the sinister Ghost of Christmas Yet-To-Come. The spirits take him on a journey through time. "Every time he encounters someone he once knew or a ghost, he says, 'Don't go!'" Holley says. "He says, 'Oh, can't I stay here? Please don't leave me.' He's very insecure and afraid of being alone. It's a position he's put himself in." Holley says the musical numbers in the play will help illuminate situations and the personalities of characters. A series of songs reveals Scrooge's gradual transition as he wonders how he can welcome people into his life. The songs include "I Hate People," "Could I Really Change?" and "I'm Going to Change." Actor Jon Oles, who plays Scrooge's impoverished clerk Bob Cratchit, has heartfelt numbers as well, including a bittersweet song about what Christmas means to children. Barely able to survive and support his family on the measly wage Scrooge pays him, Cratchit laments that he cannot give presents to his children. Other actors in the musical include John Richardson as Jacob Marley, Meagan Kirby as Mrs. Cratchit and Tuesday Provencio as Tiny Tim, the Cratchits' disabled but cheerful son. The Randall Theatre's production is based on the '70s musical film version of "Scrooge" starring Albert Finney. The production brings to the stage all of the heart, humor and high-energy musical numbers audiences have enjoyed for decades, says Robin Downward, managing artistic director at Randall Theatre. Randall Theatre also staged "Scrooge! The Musical" in December 2013 — which played to full houses throughout its run. Holley says it makes sense to bring back the popular musical for 2015. Various musical and non-musical versions of the classic appear in local theaters as well as on television. "It's such a crowd-pleaser and an iconic go-to for Christmas," she says. "People love it. They love the story. They watch it even though they know what's going to happen. For every production, they ask, 'How will they do it this time?' It's a part of people's Christmas. They have to watch their favorite version of it."
