Medford is now accepting applications for a recently vacated City Council position. "It’s a very rewarding experience," said Ward 1 Councilman Jim Key, who has been on the council since 1996. "It gives you an opportunity to help in the direction the city is going." Advertisement Councilman Ed Chun announced his resignation at the Sept. 18 council meeting, effective Oct. 3. His term expires December 2004. Chun said with juggling a family and a full-time job, he was unable to attend all of the necessary meetings. He said he supports the council receiving a small stipend, which would help make ends meet. According to the League of Oregon Cities, many city councils throughout the state receive stipends, including Klamath Falls, Beaverton and Albany. "This has been hashed about at the council," said Key. "I would agree with Ed that it makes a difference," he said, adding that he just doubts this council would pass such a thing. However, he said volunteering gives council members a freedom that they wouldn’t have otherwise. He said a salary from taxpayers could be used as leverage by whomever comes to the podium to speak to the council. "I don’t think it’s the thing to do," he said. Chun’s position is in Ward 1, which is in northeast Medford, bounded on the west by Crater Lake Avenue. On the south, the boundary zigzags up Jackson Street to Spring Street and to McAndrews Road. All prospective candidates must be a resident of Ward 1, a resident of the city of Medford for more than six months, and registered voters, according to City Recorder Beverly Sandblast. To file as a candidate you must complete an application, obtain 25 signatures from residents of Ward 1, and go through an interview process, she said. The council holds regular meetings twice each month on the first and third Thursdays, and study sessions on alternate Thursdays. The deadline for filing is Oct. 31 and interested candidates can get the filing information and forms from the city recorder, Room 382, City Hall, 411 W. Eighth St., Medford.
