The district, with the help of executive search firm Ray & Associates, Inc., began advertising nationally for a chief academic officer in March and has already interviewed several strong candidates, said Superintendent Brian Shumate. However, the district decided to reopen the position for two more weeks, through May 5, to see if there were any other educators interested. A few applied, and a couple will be interviewed Wednesday. “It’s about being prudent and making sure we’re getting the very best person possible to lead all of our instructional initiatives,” Shumate said. Once the district has named a CAO, it can begin screening applicants for the two director positions, Shumate said, adding that he would like the new CAO to be part of that decision. In January, Shumate announced his plans to reorganize the administration to include a chief academic officer, a chief operations officer, and directors of special education and student services, elementary student achievement, secondary student achievement and human resources. The new hierarchy and administrator salary schedule have since been approved by the Medford School Board. Earlier this year, Shumate promoted Brad Earl from chief financial officer to chief operations officer and Tania Tong from supervisor of student services to director of special education and student services, a cabinet-level position. Last fall, he also hired Sharilyn Cano to be director of human resources. Debbie Connolly’s position as supervisor of curriculum and assessment will be retained until her contract expires in the summer of 2016, at which point she will retire and the position will be eliminated. Julie Evans, director of elementary education, and Todd Bloomquist, director of secondary education, have accepted positions elsewhere, leaving open for now the newly created positions of director of elementary student achievement and director of secondary student achievement, respectively. The new administrative structure would have reduced their responsibilities and their pay. During her 26 years with the Medford School District, Evans served as a coach, teacher and dean at Hedrick Middle School, principal of Oak Grove Elementary and, for the last three years, director of elementary education. Both her sons were raised in the Medford School District, and her youngest will graduate from North Medford High School in June. But this summer, she’ll move north to serve as executive director of elementary schools for the Gresham-Barlow School District, where she will be closer to family. “I am very appreciative to the Medford School District for all the training and experience I've gained along the way, and the expertise this job has brought me,” Evans said. “But it is time for us to have a new chapter,” she added. Bloomquist starts July 1 as director of special services for the Grants Pass School District, where he’ll oversee special education and mental health services at the district’s six elementary schools, two middle schools and high school. “Grants Pass has a great team, great reputation, and it seems like a great fit at this time,” he said, adding that he’s always had a passion for serving special-needs students and their families. Bloomquist’s career as an educator spans 24 years, including 16 years with the Medford School District, during which he worked as a teacher and department chair at South Medford High School, director of curriculum and assessment, director of human resources and, for the last three years, director of secondary education. Both Evans and Bloomquist’s contracts with the Medford School District end June 30. “I respect and appreciate all the work Todd and Julie have done,” Shumate said Friday. “They both are moving into positions where they have great expertise and will do well.” Reach education reporter Teresa Thomas at 541-776-4497 or [email protected] .
