The Panthers, who had lost three straight to the Indians dating back to last season, scored two first-half goals and held on for a 2-1 victory. South Medford moves on to play North Medford at Spiegelberg Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday. The winner advances to the Class 4A state playoffs as the SOC’s No. 2 seed. The loser is the third seed. Roseburg, the conference’s fourth seed, hosts North Salem, the Valley League’s No. 4, team on Tuesday. South dominated a 15-minute stretch in the first half that proved to be the difference. Scott Marlow opened the scoring in the sixth minute off an assist from Alex Arazaga, and Kevin Potter added the final goal in the 27th on a direct kick from about 28 yards out. Advertisement "They’ve been a thorn in our side here that past two years," said South coach Dave Potter. "One way or another, they’ve been able to win a few games against us. "Tonight we got our opportunities and the guys delivered. We really took control of the game in the first half." The Indians (9-5) converted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to trim the deficit to 2-1. Merlin Plagge was fouled in the South Medford box and Quentin Clark followed with Roseburg’s lone goal. South Medford held a 12-9 advantage in shots on goal but was able to limit the Roseburg attack with strong defense. "(South) played very well," said Steve Kaser. "They look ready for the playoffs. "I told my team it’s very difficult to beat a good team four times in a row. South proved that." Skyline Volleyball PHOENIX 25-25-25, ILLINOIS VALLEY 17-11-17 — At Phoenix, Shonda George led a strong Phoenix service night as the Pirates finished league play unbeaten for the first time in school history. Phoenix (23-7, 12-0 Skyline) next plays Nov. 12 in pool play at the state tournament at Lane Community College in Eugene. Illinois Valley finished 3-9. George was a perfect 15-for-15 serving, while Aurora Fry was 16 of 18 and Jessica Robinson 16-for-17 with two aces to lead the Pirates. Along the net, Jessica Howard had eight kills, Ashley McCarty added seven and Kelsey Nelson six. Rebecca Garcia and Nicole Engle passed the ball well. MAZAMA 22-25-25-25, ROGUE RIVER 25-11-14-19 — At Klamath Falls, Mazama rallied from a Game 1 defeat to close out the season 6-6 in Skyline Conference play. Rogue River (2-10) had a big performance from Michelle Woodall, who led the way with six kills and 12 digs. Kayla Tocher added six kills and eight digs, while Kate Whipple and Michelle Krein contributed 15 and 11 digs, respectively. Cross Country 2A/1A DISTRICT 6 MEET — At Valley of the Rogue State Park, Cascade Christian lost the girls district title on a tiebreaker but will still send its team to the state meet Nov. 6 at Lane Community College in Eugene. Meanwhile, Mike Seus of the St. Mary’s boys qualified for state by placing second individually. The top two teams and top seven individuals advanced. Cascade Christian, led by seventh- and eighth-place finishers Megan Beard and Kate Hoskin, respectively, scored 36 points to tie Lakeview for the team title. Lakeview won the tiebreaker when its sixth runner finished ahead of Cascade Christian’s. In the boys meet, Seus, who hadn’t run in three weeks because he was on a trip and got boxed in early, nevertheless clocked 17 minutes, 41 seconds to place second.
