La Grande ends year for Ashland PORTLAND - An uncharacteristic six errors by the Ashland Pilots baseball team led to six unearned runs for La Grande and a season-ending, 10-5 loss in the American Legion A state tournament championship game on Monday. The Pilots needed to beat La Grande twice to claim the title. The state runners-up, they ended the season with a 30-5-1 record. Ashland trailed 5-1 before La Grande put the game away with a four-run eighth inning. Jayson Schroeder belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to cut La Grande's lead in half, but the Pilots couldn't overcome the large deficit. Ashland failed to get the big hit, stranding 13 runners and drawing 10 walks off La Grande pitching. AMERICAN LEGION AAA STATE TOURNAMENT - At Corvallis, the North Salem Vikings broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning to defeat Klamath Falls 5-3 in the state tournament championship game on Sunday. The Falcons were halted in a bid for their 10th state crown. Travis Strombaugh laid down a two-strike, suicide-squeeze bunt to push home the go-ahead run for the Vikings. The Falcons loaded the bases in the ninth and scored one run before North Salem shut down the rally.
