South Medford’s Sara Miles won the shot put, and the Panthers’ Logan Billy and North Medford’s Halley Folsom tied for third place in the high jump and met the qualifying standard to earn spots. The top two individuals in each event advanced, as did those meeting qualifying standards in finals. The standards are the five-year average of third-place times and marks at the state meet. There were five boys and girls finals held Thursday, along with preliminaries in most running events. The meet concludes Saturday at Springfield. The junior Miles captured the shot put at 36 feet, 11.5 inches. The mark is a season best and allowed her to repeat as conference champion. She was fourth at state last year. Folsom, a senior, is the defending state champion in the high jump and cleared 5-3. Billy, a sophomore, matched that height, an improvement of 2 inches on her personal best. MWL DISTRICT: At Springfield, Ashland’s Wyatt Thompson-Siporen advanced to the 5A state meet in three events on the first day of the Midwestern League district meet at Springfield High. Thompson-Siporen moved on with wins in the discus, javelin and long jump. With the league’s top height and the 5A’s second-highest mark, he was expected to represent in the pole vault as well but no-heighted. In the discus, he topped runner-up and teammate Dominic Meads with a throw of 150 feet, 5 inches. Meads threw 142-11. In the javelin, Thompson-Siporen edged another teammate, Grayland Lunn, with a throw of 167-3. Lund’s mark was 165-5. Thompson-Siporen long jumped 22-4.75. Crater teammates Walter Vail and Andy Monroe finished first and second, respectively, in the 3,000. Vail crossed the tape in 8 minutes, 56.66 seconds with Monroe at 8:56.97. Tyler Wanamaker collected a victory for Eagle Point in pole vault at 13-6. For the girls, Jordan Monroe seized first place in the 3,000 for Crater in 11:01.1, and Ashland’s Sydney Norvell won the pole vault at 10-0. SKYLINE DISTRICT: At Grants Pass, Phoenix’s Cole George claimed first place in the shot put on Day 1 of the Skyline Conference district meet at Grants Pass High. After the first day, the Phoenix boys are in fifth place and the Pirate girls are tied for third. George’s winning throw was 143 feet, earning a spot in next week’s state meet. The top two in each event advanced, as did those meeting qualifying standards.. The Pirate girls had the second- and third-place runners in the 3,000 meters. Runner-up Emma Amundsen clocked 10 minutes, 40.01 seconds to move on, and Nevina De Luca advanced in third with a time of 10:43.54, meeting the standard. Boys Tennis SWC DISTRICT: At Roseburg, South Medford’s Kyler Tosh and Mitch Steadman, as well as its top doubles tandem of Keigin Tosh and Ben Vaughn, advanced to the Class 6A state tournament, and the Panthers lead after the first day of the Southwest Conference district tournament at Roseburg High. Kyler Tosh and Steadman will face each other as the district meet continues on Saturday. In the quarterfinals, Kyler Tosh brought down South Eugene’s Erik Skaines, 6-2, 6-0, and Steadman got the best of Josh Taylor of the Axemen, 6-4, 6-4. Keigin Tosh and Vaughn outlasted Roseburg’s Nicholas Pritchard and Kyle Yates, 7-5, 7-5, in the quarterfinals. After being dispatched early, Kai Elam will play in the consolation finals for the Panthers. North Medford doubles team of Chris Clark and Spencer Thompson reached the quarterfinals, where they lost to South Eugene’s Eddie Kim and Joey Carlson, 6-2, 6-3. Girls Tennis SWC DISTRICT: Kelsey Bartlett, seeded second in singles, captured a Class 6A state berth by reaching the semifinals for South Medford, which sits in third place after the opening day of Southwest Conference district tournament at South Medford High. Bartlett upended Willamette’s Jessica Van Deinse 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and will face Willamette’s Ivana Bilski in the semis when play resumes Saturday. Singles and doubles players that reach the semifinals automatically qualify for state. North Medford’s Kristina Ribeiro made it to the quarterfinals before being ousted by fourth-seeded Sarah Morris of Thurston, 6-4, 6-3. Natalie Bales and Anne Miller also reached the quarterfinals in doubles for the Black Tornado but were dealt a 6-1, 6-0 defeat by Sheldon’s Molly Forrest and Dylan Clark. The Black Tornado is tied with Roseburg for fifth place. 4A/3A/2A/1A SPECIAL DISTRICT 3: Cascade Christian’s Nicole Morse, the top seed, won in the first round over Junction City’s Dianna Oh, 6-2, 6-2. The Challengers’ Cassidi Kammerzell and Alli Winter teamed to defeat Jessica Haugen and Engracia Diez of Sisters, 6-2, 7-5, in doubles. Koral Rechberg won her first match for Cascade Christian before falling to fifth-seeded Kelsey Asay of Sisters.
