The Comets, playing one of their best matches, defeated North Medford in a battle of playoff contenders, 25-21, 25-20, 25-17. Crater (10-7, 6-3 SOC) had gone to five games in five of its first eight SOC matches. There was no overtime this time. "We passed well, and we served really, really tough," said Crater coach Leaf Jensen. "It was just one of those games where you finally go, ‘Aah, that’s what I knew you guys could do, and you stepped up and did it. It was good. Three is nice. We really put it together and played very consistently." The first two games were close. North (5-4 SOC) overcame 10 kills by Erin Kinney and forged a 20-20 tie in the first game before the Comets pulled ahead. "We passed great in transition, and the right side slowed down their attack," said Jensen. "We didn’t block a lot, but we dug a ton. We set Kinney a bunch, which is a good thing because she did a great job." Similarly, Game 2 was tight. Crater led only 20-18 before Angie Wright, with three aces, and Dani Montgomery, with two kills, came up big at the end. In Game 3, the Comets started fast and weren’t headed. Defensive specialists Audrey Hop and Rochelle Salyer had nine and eight digs, respectively, for Crater, and Kinney ended up with 16 kills and seven digs. EAGLE POINT 25-25-25, KLAMATH UNION 13-7-13 — At Eagle Point, Eagle Point used a couple of long service runs to climb above .500 in the SOC with the sweep of the Pelicans. Aubrey Harrington served points 3-18 in the third game, and Sarah Erickson served points 9-21 in the second for the Eagles (5-4 SOC). For the match, Nicole Lucas had 13 kills and Ashley Curtis 12. Harrington had 18 assists. ASHLAND 25-25-25, SOUTH MEDFORD 15-17-14 — Ashland remained unbeaten in the SOC by neutralizing host South Medford’s strength in the middle. Marla Morin and Chelsea Van Lehn, who missed last week with a foot injury, each had eight kills for the Grizzlies (9-0 SOC). Tessa Maurer chipped in 11 digs and four blocks, and Van Lehn and had four aces and Chey Hale three. Outside hitter Kaylee Rickert led South in kills with eight and committed only one hitting error. Middles Jen Mendenhall and Jenny Brennan notched five and three kills, respectively, and combined for five blocks. South is 8-11, 3-6 in the SOC. GRANTS PASS 25-21-25-25, ROSEBURG 20-25-21-21 — At Grants Pass, junior middle Erin Glovinsky produced her best offensive outing of the season as Grants Pass won its second SOC match in upsetting the conference’s No. 2 team. Glovinksy slammed 16 kills and provided eight blocks to ignite the Cavers. The key to the Grants Pass win was a combination of scrappy defense and tough serving. Junior outside hitter Katie Tardieu led the passing effort with 17 digs, while freshmen Ashley Franko and Kim Gonzales added nine digs each. Ashley Gerard paced the Cavers in serving with four aces to go with seven blocks. Senior setter Ashley Bellum directed the Grants Pass attack with 48 assists. Bellum also contributed four kills and four blocks.
