North drops two in Eugene EUGENE North Medford pitchers had difficulty locating the plate and that contributed to two losses Friday at Civic Stadium. In the first game, North Eugenes Porter Smith limited the Black Tornado to a single run and provided some offensive punch in the Highlanders 6-1 victory. In the second game against South Eugene, North Medford squandered a 5-0 advantage and lost 9-8. Not only did Smith strike out three and not issue a walk, he provided three hits and scored two runs. The Black Tornado (5-3) got its lone run in the third inning when Phil Ouellette singled with two outs, stole second and scored on freshman Robbie Folsoms single. Against South Eugene, the Black Tornado grabbed an 8-7 lead in the seventh inning on back-to-back doubles by Dustin Butler and Tyler Engle. But the Axemen used Mark Wolfs two-run double in the bottom of the inning to register the win against Butler, who relieved in the sixth. In the third inning, North scored two runs to take a 5-0 lead. Shawn Backstroms single and stolen base and an RBI single by Devon Zupan accounted for the first run. Then Butlers loop double scored Zupan. On the play, South Eugene shortstop Casey Nagler and left fielder Kyle Overstake collided. The game was delayed 30 minutes as Overstake was taken away in an ambulance with a suspected rib injury. After the hiatus, North starting pitcher Folsom allowed four runs after throwing two shutout innings. Folsom issued six walks in five innings. Zupan had three hits and three RBIs, while Backstrom added three hits and Evan McArthur and Butler each had two.
