LOCAL ROUNDUP Mustangs rout Boise to open tourney Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 3, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 3, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Cody Coggins took care of the defensive side for the Medford Mustangs and got plenty of support offensively as Medford opened the 16-team Fourth of July Tournament at Reno High School in Nevada with an 11-2 rout of the Boise Capitals late Thursday night. Coggins limited Boise to three hits through six innings, striking out 10 with only two walks in a dominant effort, while the Mustangs (18-7) belted out 16 hits overall. “It was a great way to start the tournament,” said Mustangs manager Nate Mayben. “Cody Coggins did an outstanding job on the mound to get us going. They were a good ballclub — you could tell they could swing it — but Cody had his fastball and slider working and was just phenomenal on the mound.” Micah Brown highlighted the offensive display by Medford by blasting the team’s first home run of the season — a solo shot in the first inning — and finishing 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs. Brown’s two-run single in a five-run fifth inning helped the Mustangs to a 9-2 advantage, and he also pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Bryce Rogan went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, while Austin Zavala, Eric Carlson and Cole Carder each finished 2-for-4. Medford next faces the host Reno Knights at 12:30 p.m. today, with a second contest at 3 p.m. against the Washington Rush.
