PREP SOFTBALL Tornado, Comets win in softball ROSEBURG -- Not wanting to sit around nine days until their next contest, the North Medford softball team went in search of a little conditioning Wednesday against West Albany at Stewart Park. The top-ranked Black Tornado (25-1) showed just how crisp it can be, coasting to a 7-1 non-conference victory. The Black Tornado opens its hunt for a third straight Class 4A title Tuesday against Century-Oregon City winner. On Wednesday, North's Steph Adams opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning, while Becky Walker and Steph Coe combined to allow only three hits in the victory. "The girls are focused and know that right now everything is sudden death," said Binney. "We have lots of people who have played in lots of state playoff games, so we feel good. Everybody's healthy and we're looking forward to (the playoffs)." Haley Varley went 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and two RBIs for North, with Jenny Close scoring twice on a 2-for-3 effort. Megumi Hackett went 2-for-4 with an RBI. West Albany .............001 000 0 -- 1 3 0 North Medford ........210 400 x -- 7 11 1 Coburn, Gilbertson (5) and Holifield; Walker, Coe (3) and Glantz. With the score tied 1-all, Amy Sparks patiently waited and then headed for home from third base. Taken by surprise, Roseburg couldn't nab Sparks and then had the ball get away -- allowing Laura Bowers to score on the play from second base. Bowers paced Crater (19-8) with two hits, two runs and two stolen bases. Andrea Perdue picked up her 11th win of the season. Brynnen Guthrie had three hits for Roseburg (20-6), while Keri Nelson and Erin Goodell each added two in the losing cause.
