The sixth-ranked Black Tornado (24-6) won its pool by defeating Bend and South Albany and by splitting with top-ranked Central Catholic. The 25-16 victory for North was just the second loss all season for the Rams. Central Catholic returned the favor, however, by defeating North Medford in the first round of Gold Division bracket play, 25-13, 25-20. Second-ranked Gresham beat the Rams in the finals, 25-16, 20-25, 15-12. "Our goal was to make it to the gold bracket," said North Medford coach Ron Beick. "This is the last chance to see a lot of these teams before the state playoffs. I think the only disappointing thing was not getting the chance to see more teams outside of our pool." Advertisement Whitney Hodnett led the Tornado with eight kills during the pool play victory over Central Catholic. Teammate Rebecca Treger contributed six digs and Kylie Schwarm added five kills. "I feel like the last three weeks our play has steadily improved," said Beick, whose team is tied with fifth-ranked Sheldon atop the Southwest Conference standings. "Each time out I feel like we're taking the steps to get better. This was certainly another boost for us." In Silver Division play, Ashland, ranked second in Class 5A, defeated South Medford, 25-13, 25-14, in the quarterfinals but lost to Roseburg in the semis, 25-21, 25-19. The No. 9 Indians went on to beat Reynolds, 26-24, 25-15, in the championship match. Grants Pass won the Bronze Division with a 24-26, 25-21, 19-17 win over Grant. The Cavers also defeated Pendleton, 19-25, 25-14, 15-10 in the quarters and took out South Eugene, 25-14, 25-15 in the semifinals. GILCHRIST INVITATIONAL — At Gilchrist, short-handed Prospect was strong from the service line and had two players earn all-tournament honors on its way to winning the round-robin Gilchrist Invitational. The all-tournament tandem of Maeghan Scriven and Megan Shallenberger helped the Cougars compile a 3-0 record. Scriven was 14 of 15 from the service line and had 10 kills while Shallenberger drilled 91 percent of her serves and had 21 assists. The Cougars (10-1) defeated Gilchrist 25-13, 25-16, Central Christian 25-14, 25-11 and Powers 25-12, 25-10. Becky Musard and Jen King each added seven kills for Prospect, and Lindsey Verret had six. BUTTE FALLS 3, TRIAD 1 — At Butte Falls, Kyndi Sutfin's five straight aces sparked Butte Falls to a Game 1 win and the Loggers grabbed the victory, 25-19, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20. Sutfin's five aces came during a Logger six-point run which gave them a 8-3 lead. Sutfin had eight aces in all and added 13 kills. Brianna Wright reeled off seven consecutive points and crushed four aces to give Butte Falls a 15-8 lead in the second game. Wright ended with nine aces and four kills while Jossalyn Burg tallied 14 assists for the Loggers (7-4, 7-3 Mountain Valley League). Cross Country ADIDAS INVITATIONAL — At Portland, the North Medford boys had five runners place in the top 40 to earn fifth place overall in the elite division at the Adidas Cross Country Classic at Concordia College. Darrell Terry's 13th overall finish paced North Medford with a time of 16:14, the second-fastest time for the school in the last 20 years. Brittany Dunn was the top runner for the North Medford girls, finishing 13th with a time of 19:08 North Medford's Richard Zhu took 27th place with a time of 16:34 in the 5K event, which featured 103 competitors from top-ranked schools around the northwest. Josh Paul was North Medford's third best placer with a 31st overall finish in 16:40. Teammate Drew Jordan took 37th in 16:46 and Rick Nielson grabbed 39th in 16:47. SCL Football LAKEVIEW 46, ST. MARY'S 6 — Harold Down ran for 159 yards and three touchdowns and Kasey Clemens completed 6 of 9 passes for 217 yards and two scores as Lakeview won its first game of the season at St. Mary's expense at Spiegelberg Stadium. St. Mary's scored first, but Down's 39-yard touchdown gallop and David Tucker's ensuing extra-point kick put the Honkers ahead to stay. Down raced 61 yards to paydirt later in the first half and added a 3-yard scoring jaunt in the third period. Clemens and Cole Damuth hooked up for scoring plays of 29 and 65 yards. Lakeview (1-5, 1-1 Southern Cascade League) amassed 508 yards of total offense, including 271 on the ground. St. Mary's (1-5, 0-2) had 170 yards rushing but gained nothing through the air. Brian Adesman scored St. Mary's only touchdown and led the Crusaders with 64 yards on 18 carries. Robby Leonis added 55 yards on nine attempts.
