Mountain Ave., Ashland. Onkka will present a short environmental education lesson for children followed by the puppet show and play time. Snacks and a craft activity will follow. Performers, teachers and families share in activities such as music, dance, puppet shows and crafts. Saturday, Feb. 10 Advertisement THE YEAR OF THE PIG: Jacksonville celebrates the 2007 Chinese New Year, the Year of the Pig, with a lion dance and parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, in downtown Jacksonville. Throughout the day there will be historical talks, traditional performances, calligraphy, origami, fortune-telling and martial art demonstrations at various locations around town. Highlights of the event include Chinese songs and music presented by St. Mary's School Choir and students from Southern Oregon University, along with a costume show by members of the Northern California Taiwanese Opera. THE BIRDS AND THE BEES: An exploration of winged creatures featuring family activities and exhibits will be offered Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 10-11, at ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum, 1500 E. Main St., Ashland. Visitors may learn how bees communicate, make beeswax candles, go on bird and bee scavenger hunts in the museum and learn unusual and fun facts about birds and bees. Ashley Dayer of the Klamath Bird Observatory will lead a migratory-bird presentation at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10. The presentation and activities are free with museum admission. FAMILY SATURDAY: The Schneider Museum of Art will offer storytelling and an art workshop for families on Saturday, Feb. 10, at the museum on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. Debra Zaslow will present stories and songs inspired by the photographs in the museum's current exhibits from 10 to 11 a.m. Admission is free. SKI AND SNOWBOARDING FILM: "Off the Grid," Warren Miller's 2006 film featuring extreme outdoor sports, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St., Ashland. Ross Lane, Medford, offers interactive exhibits and activities designed to educate and entertain children, including the KIDS Grocery Store, KIDS Cafe, Construction Zone, Into the Woods, Water Works, KIDS Medical Center, Art Space, Toddler Town and Outdoor Space. The museum also offers self-directed and instructed arts and crafts projects and workshops, storytelling activities and a full-service café. Valentine-related activities and crafts will be available through Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the center. Children also may sing, dance and learn French or Spanish at a bilingual music and movement class that is held at 11 a.m. on Mondays. The class is open to infants through preschoolers, and tuition costs $20 per month. A free trial class is available. Wednesday, Feb. 14 SCIENCEWORKS HANDS-ON MUSEUM: "A View from Space," an exhibit that offers visitors looks at Earth from satellite image viewing stations, will be open through May 5 at the museum, 1500 E. Main St., Ashland. Interactive exhibits and activities will demonstrate how satellites orbit the Earth and capture weather images of the planet. Planetarium shows will be presented at 2 p.m. on Sundays. "A View from Space" was created by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland. ScienceWorks offers state-of-the-art exhibits, live performances and hands-on exploration for all ages. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Screwball comedies were a popular film genre of the '30s and featured scripts with fast, barbed dialogue and actors such as Cary Grant, William Powell, Carole Lombard, Claudette Colbert and Katharine Hepburn in the leading roles. "His Girl Friday" (1940), directed by Howard Hawks and starring Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell and Ralph Bellamy, will be presented Feb. 15. "The Lady Eve" (1941), directed by Preston Sturges and starring Barbara Stanwyck, Henry Fonda and Charles Coburn, will be presented Feb. 22. STREET ROD AND CUSTOM SHOW: The Rogue Valley Street Rods Club will present is 30th annual rod and custom show Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17-18, at the Jackson County Exposition Center, 1 Peninger Road, Central point. Show hours will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. RVSR is the oldest active street rod club in Southern Oregon, and 115 street rods, custom cars and specialty vehicles from throughout the Western states will be at the show. Concessions, commercial vendors and products also will be available. There will be children's coloring contests and valve cover races, making the event family-friendly. Admission is $7 for adults, $2 for children ages 6 through 12, free for children under age 6 and to members of the military in uniform. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center of Oregon Health & Science University for its treatment of medically disabled children from Southern Oregon.
