Mail Tribune 100, Dec. 13, 1922 By Alissa Corman Dec 13, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Dec. 13, 1922 POST-SEASON GAME NOW UP TO SCOTT HIGH SCHOOL TEAM Although it is not yet definitely known that Scott high school of Toledo will make a trip to the west to play Medford on New Year’s day, “Shy” Huntington, University of Oregon football coach arrived this morning accompanied by Mrs. Huntington, and will take the Medford high school football eleven in charge. “Shy” visited the sick room of Eddie Durno this morning and had a long talk with the Medford coach who is enthusiastic over the game and who is convalescing rapidly from the operation performed on him Monday for appendicitis. Portland required that Medford guarantee $1,500 for a game with Scott here on New Year’s day. This was done and the Washington high school coach in Portland was so informed by wire yesterday morning. He stated last night over the telephone that Portland would not guarantee $3,500 despite efforts he had made to have Portland civic clubs get behind the proposition and that he had wired Scott high of Toledo the following terms to this effect: “Portland will give you 60 percent of gate receipts from Christmas day game on Multnomah field; Medford guarantees you $1,500 for New Year’s Day game. Come on.” Up until press time this afternoon no answer to the above terms had been received from Toledo. It is necessary that the Toledo team be assured of $5,000 from two games on the coast. W. A. Briscoe, superintendent of Ashland schools called Superintendent A. G. Smith here this morning and stated that he wished to offer his sympathy in regard to Durno’s illness. He stated that if Medford could in any way be benefited by the services of Coach Walter Hughes of the Ashland high school that Hughes was willing to come and help out and that the Ashland school authorities would be pleased if they could be of service. Mr. Smith replied that “Shy” Huntington was here and had taken charge of the team but that if in any way it should occur that the services of Mr. Hughes could be used to advantage that Medford would not hesitate to accept Ashland’s kind offer with gratitude both to the school officials and to Hughes personally. PERSONALS Several attractive holiday parties are being planned by the management of the Fair Grounds pavilion, among them being a masquerade ball, which was to have been given on New Year’s night but in deference to the Elks annual New Year’s dinner and dance, which will take place that evening, the masquerade will be staged on Wednesday, Dec. 27th. The Pavilion orchestra has been engaged to provide the music for the Elks affair. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
