Girls basketball roundup South Eugene spurts past Tornado, 62-47 EUGENE -- South Eugene scored the last six points of the second quarter and the first eight of the third period Saturday afternoon as the third-ranked Axemen topped No. 8 North Medford, 62-47. The loss was the first in five outings for the Black Tornado, which opens Southern Oregon Conference play Tuesday night at Klamath Union (5-0). "We did a nice job of handling their pressure except for a three-or four-minute stretch that we didn't take care of the basketball," North Medford coach Mike Kay said. "That was a good lesson for us." South Eugene's Megan Nelson and Wendy Gabbe scored four points apiece in the pivotal early moments of the third quarter. Nelson finished with 16 points to lead all scorers, while Julia Barker connected for 14 and Gabbe 11. "They caught us a little flat-footed, we didn't come out with the intensity we needed," Kay said. "That hurt us. But this gets us ready for league, and that's what we came up here to do." North Medford junior post Jenny Ross erupted for a career-high 15 points, hitting all five of her free throws and 5-of-7 shots from the floor to go with three steals and three assists. Jenny Close added 11 points for North. NORTH MEDFORD (47) -- Close 11, Crenshaw 6, Ross 15, McLauchlan 4, Bennett 0, Carrigan 0, Giles 0, Manwaring 5, Ledford 0, Nelson 6. Totals: 17 11-16 47.
