Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 16, 2005 Suspect has ‘penchant for robbery,’ police say By MARK FREEMAN Mail Tribune Police say a Medford man captured after a botched robbery attempt at a Purple Parrot market early Sunday in Medford was also involved in at least one other robbery this summer. Medford police are matching notes over other similar robberies at such places as convenience stores and sandwich shops to see if suspect Lucien Moon Patchell is involved, Medford police Lt. Tim George said. "It appears Mr. Patchell is a bigger fish than we earlier thought," George said. Medford police on Monday added a second charge of second-degree robbery against Patchell, 29, who was arrested early Sunday after patrons foiled his attempt to rob the Purple Parrot outlet at the Medford Center. The charge stems from the Aug. 9 incident when a man robbed the Minute Market on South Oakdale Avenue of an undisclosed amount of cash after he told an employee that he had a gun in his pants pocket, police said. Advertisement In that incident, the man fled on foot and disappeared after dropping most of the money at the scene, police said. In Sunday’s robbery, a masked man entered the Purple Parrot at the Medford Center shortly before 2 a.m. and attempted to rob it. The would-be robber fled and was chased by several patrons north on nearby Royal Avenue, police said. A Medford police dog was brought in and discovered Patchell in the 600 block of Stevens Street, police said. Patchell, who lives in the 2700 block of Canterbury Lane, appeared Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court, where he was arraigned on charges of second-degree robbery, attempted second-degree robbery and possession of amphetamines. He was returned to the Jackson County Jail, with his bail set at $500,000. George said Medford detectives are asking investigators at police agencies throughout Jackson and Josephine counties if there are any robberies in which the robbers’ descriptions or actions were similar to the cases linked to Patchell. "He seems to have a penchant for robbery," George said. Reach reporter Mark Freeman at 776-4470, or e-mail Suspect has penchant for robbery, police say ">[email protected] .
