Joseph George Walter III, 38, fought with officers, but ultimately was subdued and taken to the Jackson County Jail, where his alleged co-conspirator, Cody Steven Dempsey, 26, has been lodged since Wednesday. Jackson County sheriff's detectives and a SWAT team went to a home in the 300 block of Elder Mill Road in Trail with a search warrant and found Walter. He charged at SWAT team deputies, fighting their attempts to control him. Walter was arrested, then treated for minor injuries at a local hospital prior to being lodged in jail, officials said. Walter and Dempsey are suspected in a robbery and assault reported about 9:50 p.m. Oct. 15 on Highway 62 just north of Shady Cove. A 24-year-old man who knew Walter and Dempsey reportedly picked up them and a third unidentified man near the intersection of Highway 227 and West Fork Trail Creek Road. The suspects asked the driver to pull over on Highway 62 near Shady Cove, and when he did, Walter and Dempsey beat the man unconscious, police said. The battered victim told police he woke up on the roadside, watching his 1996 Buick Park Avenue pull away, officials reported. Dempsey was arrested Wednesday night on a probation violation. Both Walter and Dempsey face charges of second-degree robbery, third-degree assault, unauthorized use of a vehicle and coercion. Additionally, Walter is charged with resisting arrest. Both men are lodged in jail on charges not related to this case, the sheriff's department said in a news release. A grand jury will hear the case on Oct. 27.
