Matthew Shawn Hannon, 28, was arrested by detectives Saturday night at his campsite off Queensbranch Road in Rogue River, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office. He is being held with no bail on a murder charge. Hannon was arrested just hours after Frank Morgan Wheeler, 45, of Rogue River was found dead in a driveway in the 14000 block of East Evans Creek Road in Rogue River, according to investigators. Wheeler had cases pending in Jackson County Circuit Court alleging he stole tens of thousands of dollars worth of property from across Jackson and Josephine counties. He had been scheduled to enter guilty pleas in May but failed to appear in court, triggering a warrant for his arrest, according to court records. Hannon has a lengthy criminal history involving violence, records show. In May, Rogue River police found Hannon allegedly brandishing a hatchet and threatening to kill citizens at The Homestead Lounge, according to an affidavit. He was convicted of second-degree disorderly conduct in the case in June. In 2013, Hannon began fighting with a Rogue River police officer who had responded to a call that Hannon was threatening his mother. "I pepper sprayed Hannon and he ran into a bathroom where he grabbed a heavy glass candle vase and threatened to strike me with it," the officer wrote in an affidavit. "I smashed it out of his hand with my baton and then handcuffed him." Hannon was convicted of resisting arrest in that case. In 2014, police again responded when Hannon punched his mother while she was driving and pulled on the emergency brake several times when she was driving. Police hit Hannon with a Taser stun gun, but he was not disabled by the shock and tried to punch police, whereupon he was shocked with the Taser again, police said in an affidavit. Hannon was convicted of misdemeanor charges including fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest. Also in 2014, Hannon forced entry into a woman's home, but she was able to call 911, Rogue River police said in an affidavit. "Officers arrived on scene within two minutes and were able to take Hannon into custody without incident," the affidavit said. He was convicted of first-degree criminal trespass, another misdemeanor. Later in 2014, Hannon struck a man in the head with a flashlight, witnesses said. He was arrested and later convicted of fourth-degree assault. He was also convicted of third-degree theft, harassment and second-degree disorderly conduct after taking the tags off a $10 shirt, wearing it out of Macy's in Medford and then fighting with security guards who tried to stop him.
