Josephine County Sheriff Dave Daniel said the clothes have identification linking them to the July 4 crash that claimed the lives of pilot John Belnap, 46, of Grants Pass, his son Max, 17, and friend Ryan Merker, 17. The search resumed today with as many as six divers, including three or four from Josephine County Search and Rescue. John Belnap was a member of that dive team. Daniel and Marine Deputy Ernie Fields were on the water in a boat, helping the dive effort, along with Curry County Sheriff John Ward. The Cessna apparently crashed into the Pacific shortly after takeoff from the Brookings airport. The crash scene is about 4 miles northwest of Brookings, not far from Rainbow Rock. The aluminum pieces were white, red and gun-metal colored, from the size of a cellphone up to more than a foot in diameter, Daniel said. "We're getting closer," Daniel said. Ward said the larger piece, likely from the fuselage, was crumpled into a ball, indicating a violent crash. He added that moulding from an inside door was found, and that one of the pieces of clothing was a zip-up jacket with identification linking it to the victims. Divers are sent down one at a time, each one attached to a line for safety. He said each time divers went down, they seemed to find something Wednesday. The dive ended at 1:30 p.m. Swells were only 2 to 4 feet, and the outlook was good for today, also. Visibility continues to be limited to about 4 feet. The search area is extremely rocky — some of the rocks are two stories tall, Daniel said. The goal now is to recover the bodies of the victims. Whether the wreckage should be recovered is up to the National Transportation Safety Board, Daniel said.
