Rogue Valley Audubon Society Saturday, March 26: Frank Lospalluto will lead a field trip to the Shasta Valley in California. The primary focus will be raptors and waterfowl. The group will meet at 8 a.m. at the dirt parking lot adjacent to Shop'n Kart in Ashland to make mandatory car-pool arrangements. Participants should dress in layers for cold weather. Pack a lunch and expect to return to Ashland between 2 and 4 p.m. Space is limited, so email field trip coordinator Russ Namitz at [email protected] to reserve a spot. Wednesday, April 6: The Audubon Society holds free bird walks at Agate Lake the first Wednesday of every month. The walks begin at 8:30 a.m. and end before noon. The slow-paced walk covers about 1.5 miles. Meet at the main parking area on the east side of the lake opposite the boat ramp. For details, see www.roguevalleyaudubon.org . Table Rocks hikes Saturday, March 26: A BLM environmental interpreter will lead a family hike to the top of Upper Table Rock. This is a general information hike suitable for the whole family. Topics will include wildflower identification, ethnobotany, geology, wildlife, ecology and cultural history. Space is limited to 20 people. Call 541-618-2200 to register. Hikes are 3-5 miles roundtrip along a moderate grade trail and generally last 3 to 5 hours. Bring water and lunch or a snack. Restrooms are available at the trailhead. No dogs, mountain bikes or OHVs are allowed on the trail. See more at http://nature.org/trhikes Sunday, April 3: Upper Table Rock. Urban forester and horticulturalist Tal Blankenship will talk about the benefits of growing native plants, including their wildlife value and beauty. Limited to 15 people. Register online at http://gonative.eventbrite.com Saturday, April 9: Upper Table Rock. BLM botanist Marcia Wineteer will lead a hike to explore the native flora and wildflowers of the Table Rocks. Botanist Barbara Mumblo will lead a hike to discover the dazzling array of wildflowers found on the Table Rocks. Register online at http://wildflowersabound.eventbrite.com Crater Lake snowshoe hikes Free, ranger-guided snowshoe walks are offered at 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through April. The walks last about two hours and cover a mile of moderately strenuous terrain through forests and meadows along Crater Lake's rim. No previous snowshoe experience is required, and snowshoes are provided free of charge. To sign up, call the park visitor center at 541-594-3100. Cross-country ski outings Wednesdays and Saturdays: The Southern Oregon Nordic Club holds group ski outings Wednesdays and Saturdays at various locations, weather permitting. For details, see http://new.onc.org/sonc/ Siskiyou Mountain Club work trip Friday, April 1: The club is recruiting volunteers for a day of work on the historic Butte Fork Trail, which is fading from beneath stands of primeval forest. The SMC van will leave Ashland at 7:30 a.m., with rendezvous options in Medford, Jacksonville and Ruch. From there the group will head out to the Red Buttes Wilderness and hike a couple of miles to the work site. There are large trees down, brushy sections, and fading tread to be worked on. The trip is moderate with a few steep pitches on the hike. The group will be back to the trailhead by 6 p.m. Participants must dress for the weather, with sturdy boots, durable long pants and gloves. Bring enough food and water for the day. Email [email protected] for details and to sign up. Siskiyou Chapter Native Plant Society Saturday, April 9: Rough & Ready Botanical Wayside wildflower hike. The wayside provides a great opportunity for folks to come out and enjoy the spring wildflowers no matter what your plant identification skill level might be. This is a short hike on rocky, but relatively level ground, with many wildflowers, many of them rare or of limited range. A portion of the hike will be along a wheelchair accessible path. Bring water, and bring lunch if you want. There’s a picnic table overlooking Rough & Ready Creek. Meet at the parking area at Rough & Ready Botanical Wayside south of Cave Junction on Highway 199 at mile marker 34. For information, call Suzanne at 541-291-8860. Lost Creek Trail Run Saturday, April 23: The event includes 50K, 30K and 5K routes in Joseph H. Stewart State Park. For details and to register, see the race calendar at www.southernoregonrunners.com . Siskiyou Velo Club Every Saturday: Velo Melo meets at various places and rides about 20 miles at 11 to 13 mph. No one will be dropped. Call Ginny Jensen at 541-488-1398. Every Saturday: Siskiyou Velo Slo-Mo rides begin at various morning hours from different locations. Pace: 7 to 10 mph over 12 to 18 miles on mostly flat terrain. Call Ken Kelley at 541-857-6819. Every Saturday: Siskiyou Crank It Up rides begin at various morning hours from different locations; 20 to 30 miles. Pace 12 to 15 mph, varied terrain. No one will be dropped. Call Tom Ryan at 541-261-4757. Every Saturday: Brisk rides begin at various morning hours from different locations. Rides include extensive pace lining at high speeds. Pace: 18+ mph over 50 to 65 miles on mostly hilly terrain. Call Dennis Cramer at 541-773-5804. Every Monday: Coffee rides begin at 10:30 a.m. at Colver Park in Phoenix and go to Jacksonville. Pace: 14 to 18+ mph average over 25 miles with periodic pace lines on flat terrain. Call Bob MacCracken 425-512-3829. Every Wednesday: Coffee rides begin at 11 a.m. at Rogue Valley Roasting Company in Ashland. Pace: 14 to 18+ mph with periodic pace lines over 35 to 60 miles with some hills.
