The 2-year-old girl and her brother, 3½, have no clothes besides the ones on their backs during overnight visits away from their mother’s house. Warm clothing would give them a warmer welcome at their father’s temporary residence in White City. Staying in a trailer parked in a friend’s yard, the man also lacks toys, pajamas and blankets, as well as diapers for the girl. Their mother leaves the children in his custody, which is a majority of the time, without any items for their care, the man told staff at Southern Oregon Head Start. The program supports families’ well-being and nurtures parent-child relationships to encourage lifelong learning for both children and parents. Driving his kids to Head Start classes in Medford, the 30-year-old man recently encountered more misfortune. A hit-and-run driver caused considerable damage to the car he had borrowed from his grandmother and parked at the program’s Merriman Road campus. The stress of repairing it compounds his dread over a looming divorce that he does not want, said Head Start administrators. The man’s daughter wears clothing sizes 24-month and 2T and size 4 or 5 diapers or pull-ups. Her older brother wears size 4T clothing. Both would love to cuddle under polar-fleece blankets.
