Second man arrested in I-5 assault Steven Allen Martin Wednesday Jun 21, 2017 at 12:20 PM Jun 21, 2017 at 5:28 PM A second man has been arrested in the stabbing and shooting of a man in February along Interstate 5 near Central Point. Steven Allen Martin, 27, of Medford, was arrested Tuesday by Oregon State Police, according to a news release. Both Martin and Aaron Dale Eaton, 40, of Phoenix, are accused of shooting and stabbing Christopher Applegate, 44, of Central Point, who was found by police around 6 a.m. in the 4000 block of Old Upton Road, just off the freeway north of Central Point. Early reports said Applegate had been stabbed, but Wednesday's OSP release said Applegate also had been shot. Applegate was taken to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries. The discovery of Applegate led to a massive search for a suspect along I-5 between Central Point and Gold Hill. Martin and Eaton have been indicted by the grand jury on charges of first- and second-degree assault, first-degree robbery, second-degree kidnapping, unlawful possession of a firearm and use of a weapon, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, court records show. Eaton also faces multiple drug charges. The case broke when DNA evidence found in Applegate's vehicle led police to Eaton, who was arrested June 2 and taken to the OSP office, where he allegedly confessed to the crimes, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Eaton's case. Martin remains lodged in the Jackson County Jail without bail for violating his parole on a previous second-degree burglary conviction, but Circuit Judge David Hoppe set bail at $1 million June 15 on the pending assault and robbery charges, jail and court records show. Martin's next court appearance had not been set as of Wednesday. Eaton remains lodged in jail on $675,000 bail, according to jail records. His next court appearance is set for June 26.
