"That cat has no lives left," she said. "He used them all up right now." Kagay and her husband, Jeff, owner of JBL Construction, were at their Redwood Highway home near Rogue Community College at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday when Liam climbed a power pole and made contact with electrified equipment. Pacific Power spokesman Tom Gauntt, who called the cat's survival "miraculous," said, "Apparently it had enough contact with the equipment to blow a fuse." There was a loud bang, and power went out at the Kagays' house and a neighbor's home. "We were lying in bed and we heard the big 'boom,'" Jennifer Kagay said. Her husband went outside and saw Liam lying limp on top of the transformer atop the power pole. At first, they thought he was dead. After a few minutes, to their great relief, Liam started moving — but their hearts immediately sank when they saw the 17-pound feline fall from the transformer and go sailing toward the ground. He snagged a wire with his toenail on the way down, and his fall was cushioned by some manzanita shrubs. The Kagays rushed him to the vet. Jennifer Kagay said Wednesday that Liam suffered burns to his side and his leg and may have to have the leg amputated. Liam is only 3 years old but already he's survived some adventures, including hip surgery after another bad fall a couple of years ago. Kagay said Liam doesn't usually climb trees and that she thinks maybe something scared him on Tuesday morning.
